Rogue Moving Forward with STRANGERS Sequel

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Thursday, August 28, 2008
Source: Variety

Since Rogue Pictures frequently keeps their budgets very low on horror films, there's always a chance of a possible sequel for any one of their titles. Such is the case with their summer release The Strangers, a film which cost only $9 million but wound up grossing $54 million in North American theaters. Variety reports that the first film's director, Bryan Bertino, is returning to script out the planned sequel though there is no word yet on whether he will direct the follow-up.

Bertino is a busy man at Rogue these days, the man also scripting out a supernatural thriller called Black and rewriting Alone with plans to direct.

The expectation is that Liv Tyler, along with several of the original villains, will return. Production is being slated for early 2009.

Perhaps between now and then Bryan Bertino will have learned how to create suspense and write a better script.

Im not saying the movie was perfect myklspader but at least it was kind of fresh storyline. On 9 million what do you expect to get out of it? A silver platter?
The movie was great in my view, (possible spoiler if you havent seen it), i mean hell they made the reason they were doing this to them as real as you can get, "because you were home"
that was awesome, they screwed with these people just cause they answered the door. and that is real life, you never know what is going to happen when you answer the door at 1 am in the morning, i guarantee if you watched this movie and your door is being knocked on at 1 am you are going to think twice about answering the door, lol. Expecially if you live in the middle of nowhere.
So give Bertino a break, nobody said he was like Wes Craven. The movie was good, so if you didnt like the first one, dont bother seeing the 2nd. Me, i will be there to watch the sequel.

It was definitely watchable, and I didn't feel like I wasted $9 on a ticket like I so often do. The notion of a sequel, though, doesn't do anything for me. Before long this will just be another tired horror franchise. Plus I think Liv Tyler deserves better than being relegated to the B-Movie Hall of Shame. She may not be the greatest actress alive, but she's at least good enough that she shouldn't be making horror sequels for the rest of her career.

This is really good news for me. I really enjoyed the Strangers and thought a sequel would be cool. I cant wait to see how the trailer looks. I will be there.

OMG! I can't believe I'm reading this....

The movie was so predictable. It wasn't scary nor suspenseful. When a "horror" movie makes you laugh at the situations and dialogue, it means it failed.

The real shame here is that almost everybody who went and saw The Strangers, which really was a mediocre effort, ignored (or couldn’t find) Funny Games, which has a similar premise but is vastly superior in just about every way possible. Funny Games, which is a remake of a late 90’s European film, came out in last winter/early spring and got almost no real publicity despite being well reviewed by the critics.

As to the strangers, it had a few decent moments but it was pretty much standard B grade horror film with a couple of decent actors.

The Strangers was an okay movie but in no way was it original, innovative, or "fresh" for that matter. There were parts that were somewhat suspenseful and I like Liv Tyler but it definitely did not reinvent the wheel. Anyone who sat through "Vacancy" can attest to this. The only difference was that Vacancy went even further into mundane through the use of a "happy ending" and the bad guys getting what they deserved. That, my friends was the true saving grace of The Strangers. Surprisingly, because of that ending I would not mind a sequel to this.

Spolier-----------------------------------------------------------------------Spolier

What pissed me off was the fact that they actually got away with it without any sort of consequences. Usually, I don`t mind when the villain wins but for some reason they irked me. Scott Speedmen went out like a big puss. One guy and 2 chicks and he couldn`t take anyone out? Dumbass shots his boy instead.

I enjoyed it, it wasn't great nor as scary as I though it could've been but I'm down for a sequel. Though, I can see a sequel losing the suspense and going the way of Friday the 13, a hack/slash action film.

"The expectation is that Liv Tyler, along with several of the original villains, will return"

Ok, the villains I can see, especially with the closing line, but Liv??

Ummm.....did anyone else WATCH the movie? Because I've not seen anyone comment on this line yet....

Actually, the question is did you WATCH the rest of the movie because.....

Spoiler-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liv Tyler`s character is clearly shown to be alive at the end. The Bible kid goes to touch her and she wakes up screaming. How did you miss that?
