Rogue Pictures to remake THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Thursday, August 17, 2006

Rogue Pictures has signed a deal to remake Wes Craven's THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.

Craven, who wrote and directed the original, will produce the remake with longtime partner Marianne Maddalena and Sean S. Cunningham. The latter produced the original. Craven and Rogue are eyeing an early 2007 start date.

The film follows a pair of adventurous teen girls who are kidnapped, raped and murdered by a gang of thugs. The killers unwittingly hole up in the home of one victim's parents, who, upon realizing what their guests did, devise gruesome revenge.

Craven and Cunningham received $90,000 to shoot the original from drive-in theater owners in Boston who wanted cheap second films for double-feature bills. The R rating was self-imposed, since Craven had never heard of the MPAA.

Craven mentioned that remakes of his Shocker and People Under the Stairs are in the works as well.

Again, I ask "What the Hell?" Listen, this remake sounds pretty cool considering it was a 90,000 budgeted movie originally, so giving it a feature budget isn't a bad thing, but why the hell would you want to remake the Shocker or People under the stairs? Why the hell would you want to revisit movies that you have already made that weren't even that great to begin with. Shocker was a funny, but corny ass horror flick that definitely does not need to be redone. That scene when Shocker possesses that little girl is hilarious. The People under the stairs needs to stay there. It sucked.

Dear Wes,

Please remind us of WHY you are one of the premier artists in the film industry by NOT remaking movies that have placed you on the map. Yes, "PUTS" sucked hairy ovals but that doesn't mean you need to update it; just make good movies like "Red Eye" or "NOES" but pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, just leave the remakes for the no-talent hackazoids.

Sincerely,

A Fan

These remakes are getting way out of hand. Does Craven need to pad his bank account a little or something? I've said before that I'm not all that bothered by remakes if done well, and maybe "The Last House On The Left" could be a good gory, violent thriller if it's not stripped of the elements that made it pretty shocking to my teenaged eyes when I first saw it on VHS a long time ago. But, "Shocker" and "People Under The Stairs" remakes? Please, those movies weren't very good the first time around. What's next, a re-imagining of Nightmare on Elm Street?

Don't give them any ideas, or we'll see a reimaging of Plan 9 from Outer Space.

LAST HOUSE already has a remake, altho it's legally unofficial and unaknowledged by the filmmakers. David DeFalco's relentlessly vicious and depressing CHAOS arrives on DVD 9/26.

I'd like a sauna in the masterbath, a home theater room, wi-fi nodes on all levels... oh, this a MOVIE remake... my bad.

I love Wes Craven, always have. But this is just F-d up! Wes what the hell are you thinking? There is no way the raw violence and terror of the original "Last House on the Left" (itself a remake of Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring") is going to be allowed in a remake. The remake just won't carry the same weight as the original. As for "People Under the Stairs", that movie's only 15 years old! WTF?!?!? It's fine as it is, leave it alone!!!

The only way I'd want to see this is if Craven directed it himself.

remake this and remake that, i'm sick of so many remakes, what happened to originality? I know it's all about sucking as much money with minimal work these days, but can we get the next generation of moviemaking going? NEXT!
