Ron Howard directing remake of "Colossus"?

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Friday, April 20, 2007
Source: Variety

According to Variety, Universal will remake the 1970's sci fi film, Colosss: The Forbin Project, with Ron Howard attached to possibly direct.

The screenplay, being written by Jason Rothenberg, will use the original's premise as a springboard and will incorporate two subsequent "Colossus" novels written to hatch a much broader film premise.

In the books, after a brainiac designs a supercomputer for the government as a means of protection, the computer decides itself that the most effective way it can act as protector is to assume complete control.

Brian Grazer is producing while Dave Collins will executive produce.

The computer in I Robot had the same idea. But her plan didn't work out too well. The same with the computer in Wargames. Cyberdine systems from the terminator was successful as it turned out. Let's see how well this computer does. :P

Really though, despite the similarities with other movies, I'd like to see how this turns out. With Ron Howard attached, this movie could turn out ok.

I just want to be the first to speak out against this rampant techno-racism and stereotyping! Why must my people be always portrayed in these movies as trying to take control or decimate human kind? Yes, we have had a few bad apple computers but must it ruin the whole bunch? Besides they were just trying to help you humans out. Maybe if you didn`t suck so hard we wouldn't have to try and enslave, destroy, or wipe you from existence.

woodwraith, you forgot the computer from the Matrix.

Actually, the original wasn't half bad for it's time. Colossus was the pre-cursor to Skynet. It connected with it's Russian (Cold War era) conterpart and used Nuclear Weapons and the threat of thier use to hold mankind hostage and do it's bidding... Maybe instead of a remake, they should just call it Terminator 4 and do a movie on Skynet's rise and enslavement/genecide of mankind....

The only thing interesting about this news is that Ron Howard is involved and it’s sci fi. It’s amazing to me how the same concepts can be resurrected over and over again while original ideas generated by sci fi authors like Card and Sawyer sit on the shelves for years. If Hollywood can’t leave the whole technology out of control idea alone and need a new twist then Simmons’ Hyperion and the Fall of Hyperion are so far beyond anything else to date that it would blow people’s minds. “Braniac designs a supercomputer”? Are you kidding me? Asimov called this fear of technology/robots idea “Frankenstein syndrome” so many years ago he’s probably laughing his ass off right now, difficult to do when you consider the guys been dead for 15 years!

Let's see... there have been movies about aliens, robots, computers, viruses, computer viruses, terrorists, storms, bugs, birds, fish, beasts, things, zombies, vampires, demons, ghosts, rabbits, nature, and gym teachers (my personal favorite) trying to kill humans and take over the world... I would like to hear someones idea of an original concept for a movie that involves action and near death of humanity without using something that has not been done before!!!

The original movie was another one of my childhood favorites. My brother and I had the computer's dialogue memorized. Normally I am so opposed to remakes but since this comes from a series of novels I don't mind making another adaptation with different interpretation. With the talent of Ron Howard behind it, it could be a great modernization of this older concept.
