Ron Howard talks CAT IN THE HAT's Canadian conspiracy
By: Paul ZimmermanDate: Friday, March 15, 2002
When Ron Howard says, "We're excited to be doing THE CAT IN THE HAT Mike Myers is a great talent," one might assume that really means he's just happy the lawsuits and name calling that started two years ago when Myers suddenly departed from the Imagine Entertainment produced DIETER comedy is over.
However, speaking in Las Vegas last week where he was getting the ShoWest Director of the Year Award for A BEAUTIFUL MIND, Howard suggested another reason. "Canadians are funny," he says with a laugh.
"Beginning early on with John Candy [in SPLASH]," Howard explained, "I've worked with almost all of the Canadians that have decided to come to Hollywood."
Suggesting there must be some sort of Canadian conspiracy going on Howard confirmed, "Somehow, someway they've been a big part of my professional life."
Howard, of course, found mega success at the box office last year with his big screen adaptation of HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS starring Jim Carrey, yet another comic Canadian.
"With Mike Myers, I think he's the absolute perfect blend of Seuss and irreverence," Howard said. "So the same kind of paradigm that we had going in the GRINCH, I think we're going to be very fortunate with this as well."
