Rooker for Guardians of the Galaxy

Yondu joins the cast

By Robert T. Trate     April 16, 2013

If you are going to miss Michael Rooker on The Walking Dead, fear not! Rooker will be returning to our geek collective in the form of Yondu. Wait? Who? Yondu is one of the original members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Rooker will join the likes of Chris Pratt (who is playing Starr-Lord), Dave Bautista (playing Drax), and Zoe (playing Gamora) in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The casting of Groot (a giant tree-man), Rocket Raccoon, and the film’s villain, Thanos, have yet to be announced.

With the addition of Yondu to the cast of characters, does it open the door to any other original members of the Guardians of the Galaxy?

The Brief Synopsis: Guardians of the Galaxy centers on Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Pratt), a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone want.

Who is Yondu? According to “Yondu Udonta was a game hunter of the primitive Zatoan tribe, which were humanoid beings who were native to Centauri IV. The first planet system to be colonized outside of the Sun's solar system; the colonization took place sometime during the 29th century. Due to their being intimidated by the Earth's superior technology, most Centaurian tribes established peaceful relationships with the settlers. Yondu's tribe, however, migrated from their ancestral forests to the less accessible plains, thus avoiding contact with the outworlders. 200 years after the Centaurians first contact with Earth, a ship bearing the astronaut Vance Astro arrived on Centauri IV, using an antiquated mode of star travel. Astro soon found out that Earth had beaten him to his destination centuries before, using advanced star-drive engines. Astro continued to engage in his reconnaissance mission of the planet, despite the fact that it was now obsolete”. Read his full biography here

Guardians of the Galaxy arrives August 1, 2014.

He's Got the look, with a muscle suit he'll have the body, but the voice? I hope it works out.

In the the comic Yondu had a Tonto-like "noble savage" kind of vibe. His inclusion is likely as an analog to Hawkeye. But not sure if Rooker would work for this. They could go with an Avatar-like motion capture process because the make up might look silly on a live action actor on screen.

OK I'm actually pleasantly surprised with Yondu being added. Could be they're mishmashing with the original and new teams, maybe time travel but whatever they're doing they have my full attention.

I thought if anything Rooker would get the Groot role because of his husky voice.

Is it just me or is the Mania website/server the slowest on the net??

Wiseguy 4/16/2013 3:54:03 PM

No it's not just you. I thought it was just me too but I can surf to 3 other sites before mania loads on my screen so it's mania not us

Hmmm..everything I've seen Rooker in he has that accent.   But, how am I going to argue that point when they are going to include a geniticly altered raccoon and a talking tee?  This is my least anticipated Marvel adapt.  Tied into Avengers 2 or not.  I'd rather see a Howard the Duck remake than this flick.  Hope they prove me wrong, but my "failure sense" is tingling.

The Guardian of the Galaxy storylines along with the Annihilation War from a few years back was some of the best stories going on at Marvel at the time. Despite the nutty concept of Groot and Rocket Raccoon, don't give up on it. It worked for those storylines and if given respect it can work to great effect... please please please don't disneyfy the storyline... it should be gritty, bleak, with plenty of dry/sacrcastic humor. If they insert the "cheese factor" for the young crowd, then yes, it. will. suck.

I think that's what they're aiming for Calamity which is why Gunn was just a brilliant choice
