Rose McGowan Strapping Leather in BARBARELLA?

An interesting bit of news has popped up online today courtesy of Dave Davis at Joblo. It seems that actress Rose McGowan and director Robert Rodriguez(DEATH PROOF segment of GRINDHOUSE)may be reuniting sooner then previously thought. A few months ago, she was rumored to be attached to SIN CITY 2 but that film appears to be on hold for now. Today, it's been leaked that Rodriguez is doing some test FX footage for his Troublemaker Studios production company and Rose standing in as the titular intergalactic vixen.

This may not mean anything in terms of her portraying the cult classic heroine, BARBARELLA,  previously played by Jane Fonda in the 60's version. She could be just helping out her friend, Rodriguez, in some test footage. Still, it's worth passing along to you sci-fi fans..

Big thanks to scooper, snallygaster, for passing this bit along..

Open Letter To Robert Rodriguez:

Please stop hiring your girlfriends for film leads.

CappyMorgan • Aug 18, 2007, 07:03pm •
Agreed. I think he could find a dozen better actresses than Rose. She should stick to schlock TV.

Maybe he was trying to get his freak on...?

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I think McGowan wouldn't be too bad in this role.

I still wish Drew Barrymore was doing this - I think she has the right attitude and sense of humor for this kind of film - but I'm open to see what Rodriguez does with it.

Drew Barrymore??? She can't act her way out of the bag you are currently holding her hostage in!!!

What was great about Jane Fonda's Barbarella, is that she was funny...without playing funny. She was the straight man if you will, reacting to the strange, funny and disturbingly erotic things that were happening around, and to her--and often innocent and aloof about it all. When she frequently gets molested, we all know that it's wrong, but she's out of the loop on the joke...yet we and the perv that's getting off on her know it, and it's so outrageous, that it's funny...because this girl is a warrior and smart, but not so smart in the ways of sex. We are rooting for her of course, twisting in our seats over the situations, wondering when she is going to clue in on just what the hell is going on...and do something about it, other than play the unwitting sex doll for some old super freak, but at the same time, you can't help but laugh at the fact that someone, seemingly so worldly hasn't figured out that she is being taken advantage of!!!

That's the fun, and weird reality of the Fellini inspired Euro trash-esque Barbarella...parts of which were imported into the 1980 remake of Flash Gordon via the constantly horny Princess, and the sexuallyu reluctant Dale who faces being deflowered by Ming at every turn--The same Ming who not only fathered his daughter, but more than likely deflowered her too.

This is the reason why you need a innocent fresh face play Barbarella, as it is important that we believe that this girl is being taken advantage of and duped sexuallly...ala Jane Fonda who had a largely clean reputation at the time. When you saw her acting through this stuff, you couldn't help but to think, I can't believe that this is happening to Jane Fonda, which only helped fuel the affectiveness of the dirty jokes. However, Rose McGowen and Brew Barrymore are women who get around...and everybody knows it, thus, audiences will have a real problem suspending their disbelief in regard to trying to buy either one of them as innocent in any way!!!

Further, as far as Drew, she was horrible in the Charlie's Angels films, making them even worse than they already were. Charlie's Angels should have played like a big screen version of Alias or a redo of No Return (Le Femme Nikita) but they blew it, and hired McG and Drew Barrymore to produce and star...enough said???!!!

So Metalwater, Who would you suggest play the part?

metalwater • Aug 19, 2007, 08:15am •
I have actually been contemplating that just over the last several hours. For this part, you need someone who looks like sex incarnate, and hence, is very erotic and sensual, yet at the same time, has an innocent virginal quality to her, allowing her to play a sexual dupe, if you will...for dirty minded seducers like Duran Duran, the main villain of Barbarella.

Michelle Ryan, the girl who plays the new Bionic Woman is my pick. She is still in the unjaded stage of her career and as a result...she has a really good attitude...and is a great actor, this an assessment I've drawn from the footage that I have seen. Thanks to that, she has really grown on me and thus, I can see the reason why NBC/Universal picked her for the role of Jamie Sommers (the Bionic Woman).

On a short list I have other potential actresses who would be great in the role:

Rachelle McAdams-The Note Book, Red Eye, Mean Girls

Emmy Rossum-Phantom Of The Opera

Kristen Bell-Veronica Mars, Reefer Madness (If you saw her in the S&M outfit in the latter film, you know why!!! My God, what a body!!!)

Hayden Panettiere-Heroes (She's hot and just turned 18, making her more than ready for a role like this!!!)

And lastly, a girl who will be a super mega star someday and should have gotten the role of Trixie in Speed Racer!!!

Who is she???

Eva Maria Livia Amurri-Saved!

What, you still don't know who she is???

She's Susan Sarandon's beautifully and stunningly sexy daughter!!! And, like the other girls I selected, she can act!!!

Check-out this web address, and be prepared to fall in love...I did years ago, at first sight!!!:

Well, I have to agree that Rose is probably a
little too sassy and streetwise to pull off
"Barbarella." At the time, Fonda was perfect
for the wide-eyed innocent literally rolling from seduction to seduction. Now, Metalwater, Rachelle McAdams. . .ok, could
work. Might I also suggest Jennifer Garner
or what about Kate Beckinsale?

I'm a big fan of Rodriguez but I'm not to excited or interested with this film yet. I'll have to wait and see. He's a smart director. Just a little info, Rodriguez has been married since he started work as a director, he has only recently seperated from his wife and producer. It seems as though Rodriguez and McGowen might have had something going but he hardly hires his girlfriends to star in his films.

metalwater • Aug 19, 2007, 04:25pm •
Do you know how Rodriguez and his wife became separated in the first place, and why she filed for divorce??? Well, I'll tell you, because it seems you don't know!!!

She (then the producer of his films) caught him cheating on her with McGowan on the set during the filming of Grindhouse...an open not so secret, secret on the set!!! And according to reports, McGowan and Rodriguez have been hanging around each other, three years prior, and possibly dating, unknown to his wife!!!
