PlayStation 4 Announcement

Unveiled this Month!

By Robert T. Trate     February 01, 2013
Source: Yahoo Games

It is official, Sony’s PlayStation 4 will be arriving later this year and has a February 20th premiere date. Premiere date as in a big unveiling with geeks and fanboys drooling. Yahoo Games had this to report.

“The company got the hype machine rolling Thursday evening with a mysterious teaser video. To amp things up further, the company posted a Twitter update reading simply "see the future." Within minutes, news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, confirmed through sources that this would, in fact, be the company's launch party for the PS4.”

Sony’s PS4 is to focus more on the social aspects of gaming. Making “User integration a key component”.

The big question is, will it be backward compatible?

“The chipset and graphics chip on the new PlayStation are reportedly made by different companies than those that power the PS3, making backward compatibility a less likely feature.”

I hope it is going to be backwards compatible, but I heard that it likely may not be.  I'm not a huge gamer, but I love my PS3 for blu-rays and the few games that I already have.  No way in Hades I'm dropping more than $100 for a new console in the next year or two.  (Maybe if my current PS3 bites the dust, but even then I'm going to buy something that would play the games in my library.)

This year i started realizing how im not into video games anymore really..... i guess im getting old.

Give me more details before my excitement starts off. Of course if they announce that the first launch game is a re-make of Final Fantasy 7 then i am on day one regardless of what they say! :P

@ millean - I feel you on that.  I've been burned too many times by the likes of Sega to just keep ddroping money on a console every time they have to urge to put one out.  it'll have to be some earth shattering upgrade for me to throw some money out on it.

@violator14 - My sentiments exactly.  I used to be a HUGE gamer back in the day.  Now, I'm more of a casual fan where I'll buy games that I've played in the past... like God of War.  Otherwise, I watch movies, Netflix or stream "videos" from my home computer.

After hearing from some other rumor reports, I will pass on anything new in gaming consoles.  According to other reports, the new PS4 and new Xbox will NOT play used games. Nor will they be backwards compatible.  Nintendo has alway impressed me with their backwards campatability. (Not too impressd with the other aspects of the systems.)  That is a slight draw back. But, if they make it to where used games can not be played, that is too far.

The Wii was the only console by Nintendo that was backwards compatable!

@millean,  I'd expect a $399 entry point at the very least. The PS3 launched at $500 without required hookup cables.

I think the "will not play used games" rumor has been debunked. If it were true, people couldn't take a game over toa friend's house to play on their PS4.

And Valve is releasing Steambox later this year as well, so all your favorite PC games will be coming to you through a set top box at a MUCH cheaper price than the consoles. (Hell, Steam even has a bunch of FREE games. Team Fortress 2 has been free for a couple years now)

It would be stupid to not play backward games...if it does, adios Sony or any future game console.

silversurfer 2/2/2013 3:14:17 PM

Sweet...now all of the PS3 games will go down in price...(hey, gotta look at the bright side)

Wii and Wii U are backward capatable.
