Rosenthal to receive 'Life in Music Award'

Laurence Rosenthal will be honored with the ASCAP Foundation's Life in Music Award, to be presented to the 79-year old composer during the annual ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards on April 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Marilyn Bergman, the ASCAP Foundation president, said: "In continuing the Foundation's tradition of recognizing the distinguished efforts of music creators who have made significant contributions to our nation's culture, we're very pleased to honor Larry with the Life in Music Award in celebration of his achievements in film and television music."
Rosenthal has been a prolific film and television composer with a career spanning over 50 years. He made his feature film debut in 1955, scoring the Republic western YELLOWNECK. Since then, he has written music for over 120 films and television projects, and he has won an impressive number of Emmy Awards out of twelve nominations, he has won seven awards. He has also been nominated to two Academy Awards for BECKET (1964) and MAN OF LA MANCHA (1972). In the film music community, he is known for his broad orchestral style heard in films such as CLASH OF THE TITANS, METEOR, THE RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE, BRASS TARGET and THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU. To general audiences, his name is familiar thanks to the large amount of high-profile television assignments: Rosenthal's strikingly rich music has been heard in THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES, mini-series such as ANASTASIA, PETER THE GREAT, THE STRAUSS DYNASTY AND EVERGREEN, and TV movies THE BOURNE IDENTITY, INHERIT THE WIND and CATHERINE THE GREAT. Throughout his career, Rosenthal has worked with many esteemed directors, including Arthur Penn, Arthur Hiller, Karel Reisz, Ronald Neame and Daniel Petrie.
Previous recipients of The ASCAP Foundation Life in Music Award, presented at ASCAP's Film and Television Music Awards, are Van Alexander and Buddy Baker.
As previously announced, CRASH composer Mark Isham will be presented with ASCAP's Henry Mancini Award at the ceremony. Awards will also be presented to the composers of the biggest box office film music and the most performed television music of the past year.
Founded in 1975, The ASCAP Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to supporting American music creators and encouraging their development through music education and talent development programs. Included in these are songwriting workshops, grants, scholarships, awards, recognition and community outreach programs, and public service projects for senior composers and lyricists. The ASCAP Foundation is supported by contributions from ASCAP members and from music lovers throughout the United States.
