Rumors surround MIAMI VICE

By: Karl Schneider

The upcoming film MIAMI VICE is currently surrounded by various rumors, and they aren't the good kind.

An unfinished cut of the film was screened to a select few on May 30th at the Jack London Cinema in Oakland. The cut was 2 hours and 40 minutes long, reportedly had unfinished music, a few spots of missing dialogue, and was set to be re-edited after the screening with a possible ending change.

The reviews that have creeped in are not good. No drugs, boring (or hilarious depending on which report) sex scenes, and parts that put the audience to sleep.

The movie cost a reported $125 million to make, and a source at Universal Pictures told Fox News correspondent Roger Friedman, "that's just what we're admitting to. It's probably more like $150 million."

Apparently, Mann is busy editing the film in an attempt to save it. I personally was really looking forward to the film, will be there opening weekend, and hope it isn't as bad as the early reviews. At least reviews for SUPERMAN have been nothing short of stellar.

To me the devil is in the details. It was an unfinished cut of the movie, which I highly doubt will end up being that long. We have all seen or known of movies, screened that were unfinished, then when they were completed, ended up being great thanks to someone`s awesome editing skills. I am looking forward to this movie, growing up with Miami Vice, so I`m not worried. Mann, in my opinion knows what he is doing. He is good director with an eye for style and content. Screw the early reviews.

I hope that this movie is good, but the news certainly hasn't been encouraging. When the Roger Friedman article this news item is based off of went on to say:

' A source claims director Michael Mann “still has time to fix it, but not much. He would have to pull off a miracle to make it work.” '

OUCH.

I will go anyway just cause it is Michael Mann, with the exception of Ali I enjoyed everything so far. The only issue that doesn't surprise me that the movie might not be good is just due to the casting of Foxx, the guy can't act, Oscar or not. Farrell, eh, but what the hell? You need the actor that has the bad biy image for Crockett so it fits.
These poor reviews, I gotta agree with Ponyboy76, it is a rough cut and not tight yet, so we'll see. Actually I keep hearing Superman is really better than what people have been saying or thinking (in my book, Singer alone makes it better than that X3 crap).

The reviews I've read were all at "Ain't it Cool News" and they told a somewhat different story. Most of the preview "critics" said, depending on the cut they saw, that it was a good, but not great movie. Some parts were repetitive and the movie was too long. It also seemed that the reviews became more positive when shorter cuts of the movie were screened (by shorter, I mean from two hours and fifteen minutes to two and a half hours). Some of these people said the same basic thing ponyboy76 said: that it's an unfinished movie which still has a lot of work that needs to be done in post. Another example of this kind of thing would be Vincent Gallo's "The Brown Bunny." I haven't seen it myself and have no opinion on it, but an unfinished cut was screened at Cannes and Roger Ebert said it was the worst movie ever shown there. Then, when Ebert saw the final cut some time later, he gave it three stars and pointed out how remarkable the difference in quality was.

Well,I`m going to go ahead and disagree with Myklspader, because I think Jamie Foxx is a pretty good actor. I mean, he was good in Collateral, next to Cruise. He was awesome as Ray Charles and he also did a damn fine job in a supporting role in Ali. At first, I didn't think he was going to be a quality actor, but after watching him in those movies, I changed my mind. He actually hasn't been in too many other movies. I can't even count Stealth, because the whole movie sucked ass. I think that they did a pretty damn good job of casting. The only thing I wish they did was have Edward James Olmos back as their C/O. That would have been cool.

Gotta have faith in the Mann, he's one of the best there is. I'm definately going to see it.

Mann's the man when it comes to crime dramas: Heat, To Live and Die In LA, Band of The Hand.

This movie looked horrible from the minute I saw the preview. I have also read of ridiculous plot points and amazing slips of logic in the story line that boggles the mind of the most ardent fan of the show. Karl is right, at least we have superman to look forward to....and Pirates of the Caribbean! Screw this movie, I'm taking my toys and going home!

And Heat was not that good. The actors were what directors give their first born to have and the characters were well developed, but it was a really long heist movie. Also, odd lighting techniques a la Mann and Tony Scott do not make a good movie. That movie doesn't give me any good vibes regarding Miami Vice. Now I'm really out of here!
