What They Say

The Review!
This is the finale to the OAV "remembrance" series, and it is spectacular. In terms of technicality, it maintains the video and audio excellence of the previous 3 OAV releases. In terms of content, I think it's an outstanding wrap-up to the short story. Honestly, it would've been nice if they had extended the story to 6 OAVs rather than just 4, and I've heard that the animation version leaves out some secondary character development as compared to the manga version. But it's an excellent OAV series, nonetheless. There's a "director's cut" compilation that's coming out in December, much like the way Macross Plus Movie Edition added a few minutes of new animation.

I won't give away the story, so instead I'll comment on the DVD extras. There's the usual chapter stops, character sketches, and words from staff and voice cast (Japanese text). The previous 3 OAV discs had neat (and rather unique) omake features, and this disc is no exception. You can play a quiz (multiple-choice selection) to open up 3 extra video sequences (one such video showcases the rough "sketched" animation that's supposed to help direct the action sequences - real cool stuff). The quiz questions and answers are in Japanese, but it's not too hard to take educated guesses (or just trial-and-error). The questions are shuffled, though, so you don't get the same questions in the same order every time.

The bottom line: If you already have the first 3 OAV discs, then there's no reason why you should not buy this one to round out the series. Fine purchase, even though the director's cut is on the release calendar. A+ overall.
