Long a major market for Gallic product, Russia has revealed its Francophile attachments again with a big bear hug for 'Asterix at the Olympic Games.'
Distrib Central Partnership delivered impressive results — second only to pic’s native France — for the first four days following the Jan. 31 release, with $4.39 million culled from 550 copies.
Germany followed with $2.99 million from 600 copies over its opening weekend, then Greece ($1.83 million from 60 copies) and Belgium ($1.69 million off 107 copies).
“Usually Russia is in sixth place in the European market, after France, England, Germany, Spain and Italy,” CP’s VP for international relations Armen Dishdishian said.
“The launch of Asterix has shown that with proper promotion and programming, the country’s significance for the European box office might be even higher,” he said.
