Fantastic Four and X-Men Cross Over?

EW thinks so

By Robert T. Trate     August 20, 2013
Source: Entertainment Weekly

Entertainment Weekly (via SFX) is putting two and two together that the Fantastic Four and the X-Men could share a movie universe. The next incarnation of the Fantastic Four is slated for the overcrowded 2015. The new film will be directed by Chronicle’s Josh Trank. With all the speculation of a Superman/ Batman film and The Avengers racking in the big bucks, superhero crossover films are Hollywood’s obvious choice for giant paydays. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Fox, who owns the movie rights to both the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, will deliver a cross over film.

From EW: “A possible answer to that question comes from Mark Millar, the comic book writer (and creator of Kick-Ass) who has been working for Fox as a “creative consultant” since last year. In the new issue of SFX, Millar is asked whether the new Fantastic Four will share a universe with the X-Men, and says: “Without question I think you have to see some of these guys showing up in each other’s movies.” That might read as kind of a non-answer answer, but given that the hot new thing with superhero franchises is to A) pump them out every two years, andB) create intra-continuity crossovers as soon as possible, it’s plausible that the FF and the X-M will share the screen in just a few years. (Fox did not respond to EW’s email for comment, probably because any potential FF-X-Men movie depends on the financial success of two films released in May 2014 and March 2015, respectively).”

This makes a lot of sense. However, I immediately thought of a huge cast and too many characters. Then I remembered X-Men Days of Future Past which is essentially bringing two franchises together. If that film works, arriving May 2014, we will certainly see an X-Men vs Fantastic Four movie before the end of the decade.

X-men and Fantastic Four don't belong together. Except for that FF/X-men mini series, these two teams rarely worked together unless it was a super ensemble (like the mega crossovers, Onslaught,. Secret Wars, etc..)

FF needs to be in the MCU.  We want a Thing vs Hulk fight. Reed, Tony and Banner duke it out intellectually. Galactus. Surfer. They all belong in the MCU.

I sure hope Josh Trank pulls a Joe Carnahan and walks out at the last minute. :)

If Fox was smart and actually read the source material, they would know that DOFP is the best way to do a crossover with FF.  Franklin Richards (Son of Sue & Reed Richards) is actually how they were able to send Kitty's mind back to her younger self.  But, I'm sure they would rather throw in 10 other characters that have nothing to do with the story then follow the source.

Having the Marvel World split really sucks. I would still love to see a Secret Wars Trilogy. But... that will never happen with the rights messed up. That would be the Epic of all Superhero movies. Well, at least it would be to me...

If Fox was smart they'd just try to sell FF back to Marvel and concentrate their efforts on the X universe

FF does not belong with the X-Men. FF always was more tied to the main MCU as EB said unlike the X-Men which often seemed relegated to their own corner.

All that aside this could work but expectations of it actually working are low given Fox's current track record. And Millar being involved doesn't inspire confidence in this writer either

To be honest I don't Marvel really wants the movie rights back. Especially since their plate is so admittedly full right now. At least in the short term.

Not at all happy with this idea.  Too completely different franchises.  FF belongs with Avengers as a team up alot more then X-Men.  While yes Fox does currently have the rights to both FF and X-Men (I think) chasing the "Team-up" money is a VERY BAD IDEA.  Also per past experience it has already been proven that this Studio has absolutely no idea what to do to make 1 franchise work.  Instead and just grabbing at random ideas and thinking (Hey, What could possibly go wrong?) think it thru (actually hire Marvel writers).

@redvector

No, I doubt that. I think Marvel is very sensitive to what Sony and Fox are doing with their properties. It feels like Spider-Man and X-Men are being milked dry, and that's what sucks. This is the downside to when you rent out your properties to other studios.

Eldogg42 8/20/2013 10:13:39 AM

The only reason they "rented" out those properties, was because back in the day Marvel was in the midst of Bankruptcy and needed the cash from the licensing.  At the time it was thier only option as they couldn't afford to make thier own movies and still wanted to concentrate on keeping the comics going.

This is Fox we are dicussing people.  They do not give two shits about the source material  none at all.

Aw hell, just go balls to the wall and make a Mega-Marvel Team up movie with the  X-Men, The Avengers, Fantastic 4, and Spider-Man!
