So is this supposed to be a "prequel?" Or is it just a Riddick story with no real timeline?

After months of development---including a two-month delay due to production cuts---it seems to that casting is officially heating up for Riddick, the third installment in the Vin Diesel-led franchise. Deadline reports that Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") has been chosen to be the lead female in the action adventure while Variety has confirmed that Jordi Molla will be the main villain. Sackhoff will play a character named Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tracking Riddick. Molla would play Santana, a mercenary who heads up an eight-man crew tasked with finding and killing Riddick. Returning franchise writer-director David Twohy is leading the production.
Plot Concept: Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge.
Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

It won't be a prequel, they abandoned that idea when they chose the story for chronicles of Riddick over Escape from Butcher Bay as the 2nd movie in 2004. Escape from Butcher Bay is the only Riddick prequel idea that's been considered, everything else takes place after that story, including Pitch Black.
This might not tie directly with the ending of Chronicles, but it will take place afterward for sure.
I spent some time over the holidays with some people directly involved in this project and I can say such things with certainty. Another thing that is certain, and a reason for the reduction in budget is the fact that this is going to be R-rated and purely for the cult fanbase. Excellent news.
And yes, Riddick was the victim of the in-house drive by, they said jump but he didnt' say how high.
It's coming along, slow but sure.
Very
Very
Slowly.
By the time they finally get to filming the bounty hunters will be chasing Riddick around his retirement home.
SANTANA! We going to hear some Black Magic Woman? LOL!
Sounds like a prequel, as we learned in "Chronicles" that Riddick's people , the Furians, had been destroyed by the Necromongers.
I'm pretty sure by "people" they mean the Necromongers, since they are in effect his people now after the events of the second film. This is very much a sequel, at least chronologically speaking if not plot-wise.
I heard Riddick becomes a victim of the in-house drive-by.
