Last night, SAG voters -- in a surprising move -- presented the ensemble cast award to GOSFORD PARK, while individual actor awards were given to Russell Crowe for A BEAUTIFUL MIND and Halle Berry for MONSTER'S BALL.
GOSFORD PARK's Helen Mirren was honored with the supporting actress nod, while Ian McKellen (the only winner from a genre performance) received the supporting actor award for his work in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.
Crowe's win certainly puts him out in front of the best actor pack, but he does have some hungry and talented competition: Kevin Kline for LIFE AS A HOUSE; Sean Penn, I AM SAM; Denzel Washington, TRAINING DAY; and Tom Wilkinson, IN THE BEDROOM. If Crowe does win a second Oscar, he will be the first man to do so since Tom Hanks.
Crowe kept his speech short, stating, "This is a great job. I encourage you to give everything you can to the job."
Like Crowe, Berry also gained footing in the Oscar race by beating out stellar performances by Jennifer Connelly in A BEAUTIFUL MIND; Judi Dench, IRIS; Sissy Spacek, IN THE BEDROOM; and Renee Zellweger, BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY.
"I am so proud to be an actor, I can't tell you," Berry said. She also credited her profession with saving her life.
