Sakura Con - ADV Films Panel

By Chris Beveridge     April 09, 2005

As supplied by forum moderator Pelianth:

David Wiliams was in attendance for ADV. There were no new title announcements. The panel was mostly Q&A session.

Someone asked about new distribution methods. ADV is considering them. Things being looked at include pay-per-view downloads, downloads you can then burn to disc, etc. ADV has also been approached by Sony with regards to PSP distribution. Would require new licenses in many cases. Release in this format will ultimately depend on fan demand & PSP sales.

Video-on-demand doing incredibly well. Cable companies not biting on the linear channel yet. Some problems stemming from certain cable providers wanting their *own* channels. ADV is attempting to resolve the problem by geting the linear channel on to sattelite.

Perfect collections (bricks/boxed set) are determined by how long it's been out, popularity, etc. They're considering removing extras from sets (ala the RahXephon booklets in the collection) so you get just a basic bare-bones release of the series.

Princess Tutu - The 2nd volume is basically done. DLW will be bringing it around to cons over the next month or two. ADV is hoping to make a push to introduce the series to fans unfamiliar with the title who would otherwise ignore it.

No news on Kaleido Star 2nd season yet. Some of the dub work done, but the director is currently busy working other stuff.

Gantz - There has been lots of fan reaction to the episode count. First volume is still doing fairly well. The experiment was tried in response to complaints about disc prices (SRP), as a way to bring individual disc price down. They wanted to try the 2-count DVDs with a fairly visible series so it couldn't be said that the experiment failed because the series didn't interest people.

For Monster Island casts with unlicensed second seasons: if and when the second seasons are licensed, attempts to reunite the original dub cast will be made.

Super Gals The low down on this is that the series was originally licensed before the second season was created. The license of second season was emphatically denied.

On the health of the anime retail market: In the past few years there was a huge growth, but last year's sales were fairly static. ADV's sales in first quarter '05 have met or exceeded sales goals. On the plus side, the growth has helped bring over titles that would not normally have been brought over. Some have done really well, some not. DNAngel is one title doing incredibly well, Pretear also did fairly well. Wedding Peach did "okay". Classical magical girls don't do well, just old school in general is a hard sell. Retailers especially don't like magical girls. There's a sort of "been there done that" reaction. The advantage of primarily online sales is that these titles can continue to be released.

No news on the theatrical release on Place Promised in Early Days. As for the DVD rights, say it with me folks: "Neither Confirm Nor Deny."

In response to a question regarding the Saiyuki dub, ADV would have liked to get the series. But Geneon put up money to help produce the new seasons so it looks like they got first dibs. C'est la vie.

In the realm of their original titles, Mutineer's Moon is in production! English ADR work will start soon and the animation is being worked on. No exact date on when it'll be shown, but it is coming.
