Director Sam Mendes will be making his way into franchise territory, reports HR's Heat Vision blog. The man behind American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, Road to Perdition and the award-winning series "Six Feet Under" pilot is in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the venerable James Bond franchise.

Despite the upcoming auction of MGM properties, the production is being fast-tracked and could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release. Sony co-produced and distributed the most recent installment of the 007 series with MGM.

Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing, along with "Frost/Nixon" scribe Peter Morgan. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producing. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007.

Marc Forster's 2008 Bond film, Quantum of Solace, grabbed $586 million worldwide.

Too bad bond sucks these days.

I wonder what Director has done the most Bond movies. Why didnt the studio bring back the previous director, wasnt the movie a success? Must be a budget issue, no matter how the studios spin-it , if "IT" dont make "Dollars" then it dont make "Sense".

Ar you kidding Dazzler?  Daniel Craig has been one of the best Bonds since Connery.  Casino Royal was Bond as he was written in the original novels, a hard assed killer.  And while I didn't care for the name Quantam of Solace carried on in that framework.  If anything the last two movies gave Bond the could swift kick in the ass it needed especially after Die Another Day.  Now that's a movie that sucked.

I loved Casino Royale - IMO it is one of the top 5 (maybe even top 3) best Bond films ever. Quantum of Solace, not so much. Let's hope this one is better, and please bring back Moneypenny and Q.

I'm down....I really enjoyed both CR & QoS and I'm interested to see Mendes take.

I really liked both of the new Bond movies and I am really excited that a director the calibur of Sam Mendes would be on board. This would be great.

Actually Sam Mendes did not do Six Feet Under.... That's was done by Alan Ball!

If we are talking a Bond from the novels he needs a Roles Royce with a big block V8 and a revolver. But who are we kidding. Most people only know Bond movies not novels. Graig rocks as Bond. They are better than "Bourne" films. I will admit they take allot of kinetic action from those films.

WhiteKnight 1/6/2010 7:27:22 AM

Wrong on both counts, Pilgram. Bond drove a Bently in the novels, and he carried a .25 caliber Beretta, which is a semi automatic.

Midwest, John Glen gets the title for most turns in the James Bond Director's Chair. He directed For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill consecutively. The runner up was Guy Hamilton with four. He directed Goldfinger, but he went on hiatus until returning for Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die and The Man With the Golden Gun.

Casino Royale did do a great job of kick starting the series again, but Q of S paled in comparsion.  Daniel is good as Bond, but I definitely want them to get back with some of the great old characters like MoneyPenny and Q.  I mean, who is Bond without his gadgets?  Oh right, he's Jason Bourne.  Bond has to Bond and not pretend he's Bourne.  Bourne's a good series, don't get me wrong, but I don't think Bond should have to play a copycat.

I wonder if Sam Mendes can set aside a few bucks in the budget to buy a tripod for this film?
