According to ComingSoon.net, director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) and his producing partner Joshua Donen will develop a mini-series based on the bestselling SWORD OF TRUTH book series.

ComingSoon writes, "Having been approached by Hollywood a number of times over the past decade, Goodkind was never convinced that his 400,000 word novels could be successfully compressed into worthwhile feature films. In a meeting at the author's home, the renowned director [Raimi] and producer instead conceived [him] of a groundbreaking mini-series. Within two hours Goodkind was sold on the concept and negotiations commenced. Ten months later the deal was finally concluded."

"It's a dream come true to work with someone of such remarkable vision, talent, and ability," Goodkind said. "Given Sam's sincere love for these stories and his determination to only make great films, this mini-series will be a watershed event."

Development is said to begin while Raimi finishes SPIDER-MAN 3, the first mini-series will be based off the Wizard's First Rule novel and production should get underway within the next year.

Goodkind is a really good writer, and seeing what Raimi did with Spider-Man, the show can turn out like LOTR. Raimi can strip out some aspects of the tale that just get to bogged down in details and make it a good watch. jwesty is right, the 'Wheel of Time' series is good I too have read all the books, but Jordan has completely lost his way on that story. Though entertaining, who knows what is going on. My vot is for a miniseries (on HBO) on the Belgariad or on the Shannara books.

Jwesty... have you followed any of the latest news? You seem to be months behind. There won't be another 3 books... or more. Jordan has a terminal disease that in all liklihood will kill him within the next couple of years. (All flowery positive hopes and prayers notwithstanding... that's the cold hard facts.) However, even before that, he said that this next WoT book is the last. Which to me is a horrible idea. He has written himself into a gigantic tapestry with too many frayed edges. To try and wrap it up into one book will leave too much to be desired. And after watching him drift aimlessly through the last 5 or so books... I don't see him having the focus to get it done. ---- Back on topic, I've read the entire Sword of Truth series. I agree that it started weak, but it has improved steadily. If you look up some info about Goodkind online, you will see that his biggest knock is that recently he has begun to use his books as a pulpit for some of Ayn Rand's philosophical ideas. It doesn't detract too much, but it does come across as preachy from time to time.

I have mixed feelings about this news. On one side I am glad they are finally bringing it to the screen but on the other I'm terrified that it will be a disaster. Goodkind has written 11 books in this series, I just hope that the first one goes well so that the others will be considered for filming.

Who cares what this is about A Sam Raimi film means one thing.... Bruce Campbell has a Job!!! He is the most underated actor ever!! No really . Sometimes it is very hard to tell when i am serious but Briscoe County Jr. Was the s**t.

This is great news! I'm a big fan of the Sword of Truth, and despite the fact that the series started out as mediocre, Goodkind has created a strong and unique story that gets better and better with each book. I think a mini-series, especially put together by Raimi, will be able to do the story justice.

I am so excited, this is one of my favorite authors and best time books to read, I have read every book with anticipation of the next. I hope they do a good job with this.

Oh I agree completely about WoT... its a fantastic series. But Jordan allowed it to run wild and he has too many plot threads out there to wrap up in one book no matter how big it is. (Just look at Martin's Song of Ice and Fire to see what happens when a book gets too big!) Yet, Jordan repeatedly says this is the last book. If he truly sticks to his guns on this I just don't see how he can ever hope to do half of the plot threads justice.

oh biggb and livewire, SoT is a pretty lackluster series. Maybe up until Blood of the Fold it was solid, but Goodkind's fandom has plummeted as he clearly (which someone else has pointed out) does not care about the overall story arch he's weaving. HOWEVER, Sam Raimi directing a TV miniseries could really breathe new life into this and no matter how much I've soured on this series I can't wait to see Richard Rahl in his war wizard outfit weilding the Seeker's b*tchin' sword. I agree this should def. be an HBO thang and if Bruce Campbell can grow a beard I'm totally sold.

kaybar, I must respectfully disagree about SoT being luckluster. I've enjoyed all the books, however I think it was Faith of the Fallen that hooked me, line and sinker. Yeah, sometimes he gets a little preachy, but the plot has always remained strong. And in the latest book, Phantom, he sets the story up for what I think we be a very enjoyable conclusion. I do agree with you, though, that the whole war wizard outfit and sword thing will be truly awesome.

Here's some books I'd like to see make it into a mini-series: The Pillars of the Earth The Faded Sun Trilogy AND The Light Bearer. In that order, but I am now looking forward to this as well.
