What They Say
Check it out... whaddya get by fusing the turbulent era of ancient feudal Japan with a dose of hip-hopin' vibe? None other than the infectiously cool and inventive anime, 'Samurai Champloo' that features a fresh, downtempo soundtrack that grooves like no ones business with an array of well-produced, chilled-out beats coupled with smooth house stylings. With the code of the samurai and the attitude of hip-hop, 'Samurai Champloo Original Soundtrack' is about all the funky, downtempo coolness you may ever need in a soundtrack. Features music by Fat Jon, Nujabes, Force of Nature, Tsutchie, and more.

The Review!
The 1990's gave the music world grunge, the deflowering of the 5-person harmony, and the two-hit wonder. However, it also gave birth to the trip-hop genre, as was evidenced by Portishead's "Dummy" and David Bowie's "Outside". This album can stand firmly as the Japanese grandson of the genre, and I said "grandson" because the Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future soundtracks kept the genre afloat in the Land of the Rising Sun after the European roots died out. This is very nice music, but it has its flaws. Several of the tracks are so repetitive as to be boring. However, I wouldn't be embarrassed to spin any of these at the most hardcore house party, and that's saying something for the crossover value this disc has.
Standout track: Battlecry: This really rivals trip-hop masters The Gorillaz' best work.

Skip-it track: Death Wish: The ambient noise on this track really got to me after awhile, and I almost always take the time to look down and change tracks whenever it comes up.
Where I took it: Exercising after a long day, moping over a bad grade
Where it took me: I felt like I was able to walk through the fire and not get burned because I was one bad motha.
