The Manic Maniac: Superman vs. Everybody - Aug 21, 2008 - 02:08pm
Count me in as someone who loved Superman Returns.
I mean loved.
It is easily my favorite film of that year.
I don't want to argue, I've had plenty of people explain to me what they didn't like about it.
But it truly resonated with me.
I'm only posting here to point out that there were people who really enjoyed that movie, and will be upset if it is ignored in follow ups.
DVD Review of Asylum - Jul 31, 2008 - 05:55pm
It's hard to read a review where the reviewer doesn't even get the director name right.
I'm not saying the movie is any good, but come on!
David Ellis directed Final Destinations 2 & 4 and Cellular.
He's earned the right to have his name addressed correctly in criticisms of his work.
Mumbling Kitsune: A Very Animated Batman - Jul 21, 2008 - 05:04am
Danny Elfman didn't score the series. His Theme from Burton's Batman was used in the credits.
Great composers like the late Shirley Walker deserve much of the credit for the music that was actually in the show.
DARK SECTOR - Apr 04, 2008 - 08:55am
Hell yes!
Patrick!
I haven't even looked at the review yet, just saw the byline.
Make This a Better World for Maniacs - Feb 12, 2008 - 06:32pm
I'm very old school.
I came to cinescape when Patrick Sauriol sold Coming Attractions to them.
I was frustrated at first, but soon learned to cope.
Eventually I got over the format change.
Then Patrick disappeared altogether. And so did the feeling that I was getting cutting edge news. But still, I was comfortable. And I liked some of the features.
Like I like the guy that used to do the DVD columns. I even won a few things from him. No offense, but there's too much unsubstantiated opinion and amateur editorializing now (in the DVD column).
I really dig Kurt Amacker's column, which makes me think it will probably be the next thing to go.
Hey, you asked.
I still check this site every day and hope to do so for years to come.
First Trailer for M.Night's HAPPENING - Feb 05, 2008 - 04:55pm
It does look like The Signal, in terms of plot anyway.
Ponyboy should show some love for real indie filmmaking and check out the Signal in theaters Feb 22nd.
That being said, I'm interested in seeing this.
I like Night's films.
UNTRACEABLE - Feb 01, 2008 - 05:26am
Well, now the kitten won't be a surprise.
Luc Besson Adapting ADELE BLANC Comic - Jan 29, 2008 - 02:05pm
I had the privilege of seeing the North American premiere of Angel-A last year at Sundance. Luc Besson was in attendence. There was a lot of speculation that he was no longer going to direct movies, but he did not address it. In fact, he reitterated his passion for filmmaking several times.
By the way, if you guys like Besson, I recommend Angel-A. It's sort of like a Frank Capra movie with a Luc Besson twist.
Very cool, just released on DVD a few weeks ago.
RAMBO - Jan 28, 2008 - 07:52am
A movie should be judged on how successfully it executes it's intent.
The problem is, the intent is something we can only guess.
Nevertheless, thoughtful criticism should start with an attempt at understanding what the goal of the movie was.
Redband Trailer for THE SIGNAL - Jan 09, 2008 - 07:43pm
This movie was being shot when Cell was released in bookstores.
Check out the website www.doyouhavethecrazy.com for more.
Redband Trailer for THE SIGNAL - Jan 09, 2008 - 06:09am
"The horror was directed by David Bruckner, Jacob Gentry, Dan Bush, who also penned the screenplay."
To clarify, each director wrote their own segment, or "transmission".
It's good fun.
New BEOWULF Trailer Online - Sep 20, 2007 - 01:58pm
Anyone know if this will be 3d in IMAX? That will make it worthwhile regardless of how solid it is. Worked for Polar Express.
Also, just realized both Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman wrote the screenplay. That makes it a lot more interesting.
Don Murphy Leads WE3 Adaptation - Aug 13, 2007 - 02:57pm
This was one of my all time favorite comics ever.
Seriously, one of the funniest, saddest most violent and funnest things I've read in years.
I've actually bought it three times. Twice for myself (lost it once) and once as a gift.
I wonder how it will translate to screen though...
Wiseman Shares on WOLVERINE Spinoff - Jun 22, 2007 - 08:20pm
I'll have to agree with Merin's post.
Unless you get, say, Ridley Scott to direct Wolverine, I can't get too excited.
I mean, I'll see it regardless. Just won't be too excited.
My Thoughts on FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER - Jun 20, 2007 - 01:01pm
gauleyboy420:
I find it sad that you don't see the contradictions in your rant.
At the end, you write "Learn to criticize constructively without letting your narrow Gothic view of the world turn everything black..."
It's advice you should follow. You even concede to your inability to practice what you preach in your next sentence:
"I tried to be objective in this review of your review, but..."
But nothing.
You based your entire argument on the types of clothes Kurt wears and the type of music he prefers. You put him in a box, claiming that these are the reasons he could never like a movie like FF. Even though he cites The Incredibles as an example of the formula done right. (And I wholeheartedly agree. When I saw The Incredibles in the theater I knew FF had it's work cut out for it. And ultimately, FF failed to deliver.)
Statements like "whats a goth master like you doing watching Full House?" serve to exemplify how narrow your worldview is.
Things can only fit in one box or another for you. Everything is compartmentalized. It's unfathomable to think that maybe someone who appreciates something you don't can have anything in common with you.
And your rant, filled with undercurrents of hostility, is supposedly about being unbiased.
Take a step back, see what you've written, and tell me who is being asinine.
Wes Craven - Jun 04, 2007 - 11:41am
Weinstein had nothing to do with the Elm Street Series.
Maybe you mean Bob Shaye?
Penny Dreadful - May 29, 2007 - 03:09pm
I wasn't that impressed.
If you want to see a much more entertaining low budget movie that takes place almost entirely in a car, rent DEAD END, with Ray Wise.
As for Penny Dreadful...
meh...
24 - Episode 4:00 AM – 6:00 AM - May 23, 2007 - 08:06am
Unfortunately, the biggest suprise 24 gave us this season is how bad it could suck.
New TRANSFORMERS Trailer - May 18, 2007 - 08:55am
The trailer does look awesome.
And Michael Bay was born to make this movie.
The only thing that concerns me is that I thought the same thing about Godzilla and Roland Emmerich ten years ago.
28 Weeks Later… - May 11, 2007 - 09:25am
I agree. That was ridiculous.
28 Weeks Later… - May 11, 2007 - 09:25am
I agree. That was ridiculous.
Videogame Movies: The Good, The Bad and The Worse. - Apr 17, 2007 - 12:47pm
I should keep a pen and paper handy when I read Chobot's column and the inherent response comments.
I take issue with so many things said that I can't even keep track.
1. Silent Hill: The biggest problem with the movie was how "video game" it was. The script was designed like a video game script, and the movie felt like I was watching someone else play a very pretty game. It was a series of mcguffins, plot devices found here and there that exist for no other purpose than to get the character from one set peice to another. This works in video games because you interact with the set pieces, making it less important how you got there.
In movies not so much. A shame really, because I'm a fan of Roger Avery (someone whose name was overlooked in all the discussion of the movie, something he has been cursed by several times-- though in the case of Silent Hill being overlooked as screenwriter might be a blessing)
Also, some angry poster mentioned The Matrix ripped off Dark City. I have to admit, I felt a bit dismayed when The Matrix recieved all it's accollades of brilliance just a few months after Dark City had been virtually ignored at the box office. But it's common knowledge that both were in production around the same time, and that it took The Matrix a LOT longer to get finished than was originally anticipated. It was waaay over budget and had it's release date pushed back several times.
Point being: The Wachowski's probably didn't have time to see Dark City till it was on DVD, if ever. And if they had seen it during it's theatrical run, they were well into filming Neo & Co.'s adventures.
Now for my opinions:
1. 300 was good visceral fun. I Liked it better than Sin City, which I did enjoy but suffered because I do get numb dealing with Frank Miller's cynical world view. Somehow I didn't feel 300 had the same problems. And the visuals didn't distract me as much as I'd feared. In fact, I thought it matched the story well.
2. Grindhouse was very fun. My only problem was that Tarantino did a little too much masturbating with his dialogue. It's kind of a trademark for him, I know. But I was really waiting for it to go somewhere a few times. I've already seen Tarantino make characters talk about obscure pop culture shit. I know what it sounds like. I know what it looks like. The movie was much better when it stuck to the story.
On that note:
3. Fact: Kurt Russell=awesome.
4. See.. I forgot everything else I wanted to address...
"24: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM" - Mar 07, 2007 - 06:36pm
Yeah.
Jack's been a prisoner of three different organizations today alone.
This series sometimes flies waaaayy over the edge of plausibility, but the best moments are the ones that get you thinking "what if".
The dad/brother conspiracy had potential, but it's all undermined when the character doesn't react in a logical way.
I've been dissapointed with the lack of direction the show has this season, and hope it can tighten things back up soon.
Still, it's the only show I watch regularly.
Except The Simpsons.
How to Land Yourself a Great Broad - Feb 21, 2007 - 05:32pm
Seriously, though. The article is under the Sub Heading : "How To Land Yourself a Great Broad".
That's misleading. It sounds more like "How to Land A Rather Typical Bitch" after reading it.
No offense.
How to Land Yourself a Great Broad - Feb 20, 2007 - 03:10pm
Chicks like guys that don't like them. If you put yourself infront a girl and ignore her, she will work for your attention. Unless she's trying to get someone else's attention. In that case, go find another girl to ignore. Or ignore her harder.
Aaron Eckhart joins "The Dark Knight" - Feb 16, 2007 - 07:37pm
What would really be interesting is to see if Aaron Eckhart could play a black Two Face/Harvey Dent.
Or at least a half black one.
"24: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM" - Feb 16, 2007 - 11:34am
I think it's been a litlle weak actually. A little soap opera melodramatic. I'm accustomed to the show being over the top, but I think it's gone too far. We have the reveal that Jack's brother was the mastermind from last season. Then we reveal that his father is an even bigger a$$hole. Try saying that in a sentence:
" My father conspired with and then killed my brother after my brother confessed that he was behind the former president's assasination and my own incarceration in a Chinese prison"
That doesn't really roll off the tongue.
And I know I'm supposed to take this "real time" thing with a grain of salt, and I do... but I can't help but be taken out of the world of 24 when I realize that Morris gets kidnapped, tortured and convinced to help kill millions of Americans within 20 minutes, and then is back at work at CTU within the hour. I guess those beatings weren't as bad as they looked. In which case, he really shouldn't have cracked so easily. And as far as Presidential assasinations not being seen before, I believe The late David Palmer would disagree. One attempt as Senator (season 1), one success as former President(last season).
And as much as I think James Cromwell rules, I would have loved for Jack's dad t be played by Donald Sutherland. That would have rocked past the script problems.
"Superman Returns" sequel: Shorter, tighter, action-packed - Jan 17, 2007 - 08:49pm
I'm exhausted, and I've chimed in on this topic many times. So I'll keep it simple.
Superman Returns rocked me in a way few films do, and Pirates 2 let me down in the same way.
Platinum Dunes working on "Friday the 13th" remake - Jan 09, 2007 - 11:40am
The big questions/concerns for me are:
1. What does this mean for Freddy vs Jason Franchise
2. Why Lieberman? TCM The Beginning was one of the most joyless horror films I've ever seen. And Darkness Falls? Unbearably bad.
This project was talked up about a year ago, and was at about the same point. No script, no details. They did do some casting calls, but nothing came of it. Could be entertaining if done right, but we'll see.
"Live Free or Die Hard" Trailer Online - Dec 16, 2006 - 11:19am
I'll see it. Stunts look great.
But I think They've lost sight of the character of John McClain. What made the first movie work was that he was an everyman. He was vulnerable. He did freak out. He did walk the line of panic and cool. He gave voice to our concerns in the situation he was in.
And he had no shoes. Brilliant.
But that character is nothing like the one we saw in the last movie or these trailers.
If they at least acknowledge the change, I'll be happy.
"newuniversal: #1" - Dec 12, 2006 - 08:17am
You know, I don't mean to disagree...
And I'm not the most knowledgeable Marvel fan...
But I don't think the New Universe characters were ever incorporated into the regular Marvel Universe.
I think there may have been a Star Brand reference in Quasar once, but that's it.
"Pirates" fans ravage DVD shelves - Dec 07, 2006 - 10:36am
I thought this was one of the biggest let downs of the year.
I began to wonder if something was wrong with me because I wasn't enjoying it as much as everyone else. And at the same time, I loved Superman Returns, which everyone hated.
Realizing I was so out of touch with the pulse of the people almost made me want to quit making films.
Toby Maguire done with "Spider-Man"? - Dec 01, 2006 - 08:21am
At the Comic Con this year year he was pretty Gung ho about further movies. I think this is posturing.
They also showed a rough draft teaser that has Venom in it at the very end. It was on Youtube for a while but Sony made them take it down.
You could probably still find it with a google video search.
Halfway Through 52 - Nov 15, 2006 - 02:45pm
A bang, I think, is something I wish the teaser for my upcoming short film ONE HALLOWEEN NIGHT would get more of.
I think...
You can find it right here on this site!
(shameless, I know)
Halfway Through 52 - Nov 15, 2006 - 12:46am
Having the column on Saturday sucks.
I love Wednesdays. I look forward to reading this column, figuring out what I can afford to buy, and then going to the comic store.
More than any other column, this one dictates where I spend my money.
I suppose the bright side is that there will at least be something new to read on Saturdays from now on. All of these sights seem to take off on the weekends.
52 has been suprisingly fun.
Count me in as someone who loved Superman Returns. I mean loved. It is easily my favorite film of that year. I don't want to argue, I've had plenty of people explain to me what they didn't like about it. But it truly resonated with me.
