Saturday Superhero Round-up

Cobie Smulders Closes In On 'Avengers'

It's been a very busy week on the comics to film front with a lot of casting going on, a lot of news and a whole lot of rumors. Saturday has seen a slew of different reports and speculation abound out there so we're going to do some bullet point roundups of it to see where things lay until we get the, you know, official confirmations for some o fit.

SuperHero Hype has a number of pieces up that talk about Diane Kruger denying she's up for any part in the Avengers movies as Nick Fury's sidekick. Deadline is indicating that the role has definitely gone to Cobie Smulders and that she will be playing the role of Maria Hill. The role is certainly an interesting one as it has the potential, potential, to be like Jackson's deal where it could be for multiple pictures as a minor role of some note.

On the Superman front, Latino Review thinks they've got the goods on who the female lead character will be in Zack Snyder's film by stating that it'll be for the role of Ursa, who we saw both in Superman II alongside Zod.

With Dark Knight Rises, Latino Review is also indicating that some word out of Michigan is that Warner Bros. has been scouting in the area for a place that would work as a hideout for Batman's sidekick Robin. This is likely a bit of misdirection on someone's part as Nolan has said that he doesn't think Robin would fit in the world of Batman that he's created, but speculation about Joseph Gordon-Levitt's casting may be related to it as a potential Nightwing style character.

On a music oriented note, Collider is reporting that Alan Menken has been tapped to write the music score for Captain America: The First Avenger. Menken's got quite the list of credits to him as he's know for working on a number of big Disney films over the years and being one of the driving forces behind The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Considering the nature of the film and its obviously patriotic undertones, the music score will be an interesting aspect of the feature to watch.

Hero Complex has a neat little piece where they get the word from Zack Snyder about which version of Superman he visualizes the most from comic book form. In the piece he talks about there being so many interpretations over the years, he comes down to the interesting split between Jim Lee and Curt Swan. Take a gander at that and more about the art of Superman over the years and Snyder's view on it here.

Is this your Maria Hill?

Thanks to Wiseguy for the Cobie Smulders submission.

I doubt a lot of the side characters/sidekicks will get much screen time in Avengers. The movie's got to focus on the relationships of the actual Avengers. That's what we all want to see. Cap and Iron Man at odds, Thor and Hulk throwing down and Hawkeye laughing at all of them.

I really hope we don't get Zod and crew in the new Superman movie. Been there done that. Snyder needs to learn a lesson from SR. We don't want to see a rehash of what we've already seen. Give us a NEW villain!

As far as I'm concerned, Nolan can do whatever he wants with Batman; he's earned that right after delivering the goods on the first two films.

I can't wait for the Captain America spot tomorrow during the Super Bowl. Everything I've seen looks great, including the poster.

The Spider-Man costume looks like crap. I know it'll look better when properly lit for the film, but it looks like some alternate universe costume. Why change the costume? There's nothing wrong with it. It's the same for the Green Lantern costume. It looks like crap. Producers: Why change something that your fan base is used to just to put your stamp on it. You alienate the very people who are going to help your film sink or swim with box office dollars and comments on the web.

The Spider-Man costume change is because the movie is based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. And I agree not crazy about the change.

I don't know. Ursa by herself is an interesting twist if true.  I doubt it'll be Volcana or Livewire...

Wasp is a more interesting character but I think she deserves more screen time ala in the Antman movie first.  Anyway, Smulders is the best part of HIMYM hands down so decent choice...

You can't go right to NIghtwing. That's lame. After watching The Batman series, and Inception,  I hoped they'd do Batgirl first with Ellen Page...

I think Robin should be in the Dark Knight... Robin is just too important a part of the Bat's legen to be ignored... and if anyone can get it right it's Nolan....

As seen in the comics over the last few years, Robin can be very cool, he doesn't have to be the ever smiling wise cracking sidekick, he can be an effective part of the Bat's game.

I was thinking Baccarin might land the Maria Hill role mostly because everytime I see her short hair it reminds me of the character. I'm sure Smulders is good enough for the part though. She is very good looking to boot

Ursa as a villain would  disappoint me unless there's more like maybe Doomsday (read a rumor about that) and she's involved. Otherwise it's too close to another Zod episode IMO

Nightwing without ever a Robin? Well Nolan has already fucked with the franchise enough so I wouldn't be surprised. I'm assuming he knows Robin grew into Nightwing and not the other way around. Ah why do I bother

By and large the Ultimate Universe sucks, it's for people who can't be bothered to get up to date via TPBs...

For God sake use google, I hadn't read x-men for ten years and got right up to date by using the internet, the information is there, we NEVER needed the Ultimate Universe...

BunyonSnipe 2/6/2011 7:53:05 AM

Let's get Nolan's trilogy out of the way, no Nightwing, no Robin!

Do like they are doing with The Dark Tower, make a Batman movie with Dick Grayson as Robin, then a 13 episdode TV series ending with him becoming Nightwing...

Then a second film with Jason Todd, folloed by a 13 part TV series end in his death at the hands of the Joker...

Finally Tim Drake becomes Robin andclears the way for the third TV series set during Cataclysm/No Man's Land ending with Todd returning as Red Hood...

Wise, about that Cobie Smulders submission...WOW!  What a sweet treat she is...Well done with that submission!  About Nolan and the Dark Knight're right man, why bother?!!  LOL!

Ihave to agree with Bunyonsnipe , The Ultimate Universe kind of sucks. Yes, there may have been a need to update some of the origins but Marvel has done that subtley through the years, retconning things. Having a Thor who may or may not be just a mental patient, most of theX-men dead, everyone pretty much working for Shield, and Tony Stark having a smarter more successful brother is just stupid.
