Here, hot off our tapes of the Saturn Award interviews is more info from Joss Whedon. Yesterday we brought you his quotes on the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER animated show, the ups and downs of producing FIREFLY for Fox this fall and more. Today we've got Whedon's thoughts on another year of BUFFY (Sarah Michelle Gellar's contract runs out at the end of next season) and more.
"I never plan beyond one year," Whedon said when asked about more BUFFY on UPN. "I plan it one year at a time."
He also was quick to try to depress buzz that he and the BUFFY crew are transforming Spike into a neo-Angel for BUFFY.
"We have an ANGEL. I think we'll turn to something else," Whedon said, also shooting down rumors of Spike on the BUFFY spin-off. "There are no plans to put [Spike] on ANGEL."
Whedon also celebrated the recent uptick in the quality of genre fare, saying, "I'm happy to see people are starting to understand story and structure. I'm seeing more movies that could have been throw-aways, like SPIDER-MAN, actually being good."
That being said, Whedon got more specific about his own projects, and let us in on his inspiration for FIREFLY.
"I love spaceships," Whedon said. "I love sci-fi. I love hard-science sci-fi. I wanted to do a show without latex. I wanted to come back down to Earth and do a western. I wanted to make STAGECOACH really bad and that was the impetus. [I don't think] there will be aliens three or four hundred years from now [when FIREFLY is set]. There would just be people, and that's the point. They're not smarter, they're not better. War hasn't been abolished. Some of them are decent, some of them aren't. Some are just trying to scrape by after being trodden on by history. ... It's a very low-tech show. It's a sort of immigrant story, taking from all the cultures we already have and imagining them spread out over a galaxy."
When asked again about a BUFFY movie, he said it probably won't happen now that Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't interested. When asked if he'd consider doing it without her, he said simply, "No. Never."
