SAW IV First Cut Gets NC-17

At his Comic Con exhibit in Hall H, SAW IV director Darren Lynn Bousman, revealed that the MPAA had just given them a NC-17 Rating for the first cut of their film. They will now have to decide on what to do next, keep it as is or edit it back down to an R-Rating. Best guess scenario is of course the R-Rating option to get it in most theater chains across the states for Lionsgate, then release it in "unrated" fashion on Dvd.

Also at the exhibit was "Jigsaw" actor Tobin Bell who answered questions for audience and watched a "death" scene from SAW IV. Spoilers follow below, readers...

In the scene, a bald man with a collar wakes up terrified on a floor with his eyes sewn shut. The collar around his neck has a chain attached to it...and it follows the chain to the man holding it, actor Justin Louis, who has his mouth sewn shut. You understand the scene now. One man can't see while the other can't talk. The blind man begins tossing weapons around the room hoping to get his captor while the mute man notices a key on the back of the collar which could get him and the blind man out of the "trap". They fight each other in frenzied fashion and the blind man hacks off the leg of Justin Louis. After he notices his leg off, he hacks the blind man to small pieces and looks for the key only to find out "time has run out." They both die horribly.

Maybe I'm a prude, but I see no joy or entertainment in these "torture porn" movies. I was in the Army, I fought in Afghanistan, so I've seen my share of gore - I'm far from delicate or easily disturbed. But what DOES disturb me is the idea of people entertained by movies like Saw and Hostel that feature overly elaborate and gruesome deaths for no real purpose other than sadistic enjoyment.

Someone please enlighten me if there's any other sort of enjoyment gained from these movies that I'm missing. I mean, I only read about them on wikipedia and that's disturbing enough.

One thing I do like about Saw is it's use of puzzles. I think Cube does a good job at it as well. Hostel is overrated as is its director.

SAW IV probably had more than one person smoking, which is why it got the NC17. My guess would be the producers intentionally tried to get that rating so they can get the free marketing. What are the odds that they announce it at Comic Con?

When is there a Nightmare on Elm Street remake? I'm sure it'll be out within the next 5 years.

Well, I would only group Saw & Hostel together as being in the same torture/gore genre, but stylisticly, Saw actually has, well.. style while Hostel is literally just "lets get some people in a room and have them tortured and killed". There is really no point at all to the movie except to show the people being tortured. Saw, on the other hand at least in its first few movies has some sort of theme and plot to it. In his own twisted way Jigsaw is doing these things because of a warped sense of morality. Granted he`s nuts, but at least we get the reason behind why he does these things and not just people paying to torture and kill someone just for sadistic fun.

The movie will get its R rating. They're making it sound like it's going to be this big deal, but it won't be. There's a movie coming out in the fall called Hatchet. It had an NC-17 for a little while, until they made cuts, and got an R. Saw IV will have cuts made to get the R rating they need to get the young kids in the theater. I, myself, don't plan on seeing this one, so it makes no difference.

If you want to see horror as it should be, see The Abandoned. It's one of those 8 Films to Die For, from the 2006 Horrorfest. Yea there's gore, but what horror movie doesn't have gore. But nothing on the scale of Saw or Hostel. It's creepy, freaky and I actually screamed at one part (haven't done that in a horror movie EVER!). Now I want to see the other 7 movies.

Don't bother with "The Gravedancers". It is pathetic. "Unrest" was pretty lame too. I think for the most part this "to die for" thing is just a marketing ploy to make money on films no distributor in their right mind would release because they are so bad (Ok - so 2 out of 8 isn't really giving me that much credibility - BUT "Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror"? COME ON!!!!!!). I have "the Abandoned" on my netflix so I haven't given up yet....

They no longer make horror movies, they make gore movies. Horror movies were good, gore movies have never been good.

celt6, you're no prude; you're right on the money. These torture porn flicks are, frankly, filth. It's a damn shame there's a market for them out there. It doesn't exactly speak well of the deviants who drive the demand for that garbage.

And thanks for your service in Afghanistan. You are the man.

Is Hood Of Horror part of it? I looked at the list of movies and that was like #9. Maybe it's just a 'bonus' or something.
