When last week's news struck that revealed helmer John Chu had been officially picked to direct Paramount Pictures' sequel G.I. Joe 2, the trades went into speculation mode by suggesting that some characters wouldn't be returning. The report said that Channing Tatum would likely be returning as Duke while casting doubts as to whether Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sienna Millar will return to play Cobra Commander and Baroness.
But what about the other Joes and Cobras from the 2009 comic film?
Well, Rachel Nichols has made it a point via her Twitter that she hasn't been asked to return to the role of Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara or that she wasn't returning. In her tweet last night, she may have jumped the gun by revealing only three characters would be returning for the sequel and that her role wasn't one of them.
"GI JOE 2 News Flash: The only characters to return in the JON CHU directed sequel will be SNAKE EYES, STORM SHADOW, and DUKE..."
With the character-limited text that comes from Twitter, we cannot tell if Rachel is upset by the fact that her Scarlett is a no-show in the just-turned in sequel script from Zombieland writing team Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick or whether she is just telling everyone ahead of time so she doesn't receive the question in the first place. We'll know more when someone poses her that specific question.
If her tweet is correct, the only returning principal characters would be Tatum, Ray Park and Byung-hun Lee. With Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow being so closely related in Joe lore and being the only returning actors for the Chu-led production, we'll let you Maniacs speculate on what the story will be centering on...
Paramount Pictures has revealed that G.I. Joe 2 will roll into theaters August 10, 2012.
