We've just been informed by a source that the IMAX Corporation will announce shortly that they will be releasing an IMAX DMR version of
ROBOTS on the same day as the picture's general release, that being March 11, 2005. The CG animated film is 20th Century Fox's follow-up to
ICE AGE and stars the voices of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Mel Brooks, Greg Kinnear, Drew Carey and Robin Williams.
The IMAX DMR process digitally re-masters 35mm feature films so that they can be presented for the IMAX theater environment. A computer analyzes the video and audio data from the existing film, tweaks the colors of the film while retaining the film quality and its original structure, re-shapes the audio for the IMAX six channel sound system and then codes it onto a new reel of 70mm film stock. The result is a studio feature film like
HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN or
THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS being able to be broadcast on an IMAX screen and utilizing the full capacity of the theater's presentation systems.
Based on what our source tells us, we expect either Fox or IMAX to make an announcement concerning the
ROBOTS IMAX DMR cut shortly.
