SCOOP: The ultimate MATRIX DVD set is coming!

By: Patrick Sauriol
Date: Thursday, May 20, 2004

Thanks to a reader of ours, we've been given the link to the first public solicitation for an upcoming MATRIX TRILOGY DVD box set. The solicitation went up at EZY DVD, an online retail store servicing region four DVD players, Australia. Thanks to the efforts of other sources we know, we can confirm that there is a plan by Warner Home Video to release a similar MATRIX box set containing the three movies, the ANIMATRIX and hours of previously unreleased behind-the-scenes footage and deleted scenes for North American (region 1) consumers.

First, let's look at the information that's given on the EZY website and what they say the set consists of:

  • All three films (THE MATRIX - three discs, THE MATRIX RELOADED -- three discs, and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS -- two discs)
  • An extended version of THE MATRIX RELOADED containing one hour of additional footage
  • New documentaries
  • New commentary tracks for the films
  • High-definition film transfers for the movies
  • Nine hours of previously never-before-seen footage
  • Additional features not as yet revealed

The EZY site does not list a release date nor a price point for THE MATRIX TRILOGY DVD set, but the reader that alerted us to the listing guesstimates £60 - 80 (and bear in mind that's Australian currency.)

[Our thanks to Michael Lauzon for being the first to write in about the news!]

Coming Attractions at Cinescape has been able to confirm with our sources that an ultimate MATRIX DVD box set will be for sale before the end of 2004. We were also told that everything that is THE MATRIX will be on those discs including the films, THE ANIMATRIX, loads of bonus material, a selection of the comic stories from the movies' official website and lots, lots more. There is also likely to be commentary tracks by the notoriously media shy Wachowski brothers. Specific bonus material could not be determined, as the set is still being produced -- although we were also told it's supposed to be 10 DVDs in total and not 9. Perhaps plans may have changed or a 9-disc set is what will be available for region four consumers only.

Warner Home Video has not made any kind of announcement that a mega MATRIX DVD set is in development or that it will be released before the conclusion of 2004; nevertheless, there have been rumors of it for almost a year. After today's discovery, we imagine it's just a matter of time now until an official statement is released.
