This prequel news to the 2002 Universal film, SCORPION KING, all started back in June when Ryan Rotten broke the scoop of it happening. Ryan revealed that RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION director, Russell Mulcahy, would be in charge of said prequel. Now, Moviehole is giving more details on the project. Dwayne "formerly known as The Rock" Johnson will not be in the film. For who they're looking for, click on the moviehole link above..

Casting is underway on "The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian," a Dwayne Johnson-less sequel to the "Mummy Returns" spin-off.

Produced by Patti Jackson and Lisa Gooding, and directed by Russell Mulcahy ("Highlander"), the film will tell the backstory of the Polynesian warrior and his relationship with long time love Layla.

The film, set to start shooting in South Africa on October 1, is on the lookout for an actor to fill the Rock's shoes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't The Scorpion King a prequel of the Mummy Returns? Thus making this a prequel of a prequel....and how are theyre Polynesians in North Africa/Middle East?

No, you're correct, Triangle.

lol Who reallly knows what they're thinking...But yes, this is a prequel of a prequel....of a remake...

Hate to bash movies before full details emerge, but this sounds like a straight to DVD movie to me.
The only reason I even went to see the Scorpion King the first time was because The Rock was in it. It was an okay movie. Why the hell would we want to see a prequel of a prequel to a spinoff from a sequel of a remake without the star of the first one?

You're all wrong...this is a prequel, to a side-quel prequel, to a sequel to a remake!!! And now that that's settled...let's move on to my commentary:

They'll green light this mess of a prequel, based on the cheap piece of garbage mess of a movie that spawned it...and was a embarrassing failure at the box office, for all involved, but they won't green light a sequel(s) to Serenity, which was a wonderful movie that had good to great reviews, and received probably 1/50th of the support from Universal/NBC, via publicity, media interviews, and commercial ads that the sloppy Scorpion King got, and yet, nearly made almost as much money in theatres???!!!

WTF is this???!!! Is every studio exec on crack these days, or is it just the ones at Universal/NBC???!!!

I would prefer a sequel about the fall of the Scorpion King. I have no interest in a prequel. Other than The Scorpion King, The Rock's movies have been mediocore at best. Doom and Walking Tall were terrible. His new film doesn't look very good with him as a quarterback who discovers he has a daughter. I don't care what the name of it is, I have no interest.

Ok, now I know I am not one for normally bashing ideas or movies before I see them, but I think this has to be an exception. I did not think the first Scorpion King was good enogh to merrit a Prequeal sequal reamke that is not equal to its money intake. It hardly ever works when the original actor does not return.

Jppintar, I guess you have never seen him in Be Cool, The Rundown, or Gridiron Gang. All three were pretty damn good movies. And I actually liked Walking Tall. You can`t fault him for Doom. It was a badly written piece of crap. Its funny, how actors like him get crapped on by people, but make out like Arnold Governator was a freakin shakespearean actor.
Anyway, this movie is as bad as an idea as donut day at a fat camp.

madmanic999 • Aug 16, 2007, 08:06am •
Agreed pony, I especially liked Gridiron Gang, he was perfect for the role... I think in Johson's case he is allowing people around him to influence his decisions on what scripts and projects he is taking, but he can act which is something not many other football/wrestling stars who became actors can say.
As for the Scorpion King prequel, the only reason to see the Scorpion King was to see the Rock play the character, and the movie wasn't that good, so this baffles me...

CappyMorgan • Aug 16, 2007, 08:08am •
I completely agree manic...the original was pure cheese and camp. The Rock was the only reason anyone even saw the film. Why bother making a new version without him?
