The newest entry in Universal's DVD Originals offerings, The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian, commenced principal photography in Capetown, South Africa on October 1, 2007. Universal Studios Home Entertainment Family Productions is co-producing with Film Afrika and ApolloMovie. Universal Studios Home Entertainment is distributing the all-new epic adventure, which expands the line's presence into the live-action adventure arena for the first time. The film is slated for release on DVD in 2008.

The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian is the thrilling prequel to The Scorpion King, the action blockbuster that starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Mathayus, the fearsome warrior king of an ancient desert empire. The new film, a heroic tale of loyalty and betrayal filled with heart-stopping action and thrilling visual effects, tells the story of how the young Mathayus rose to become the Scorpion King. Shot entirely in South Africa, this entertaining blend of myth, magic and muscle is directed by Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction, Highlander) and stars Michael Copon (pictured, "Beyond the Break," Bring It On: In It to Win It) as the young hero Mathayus, Simon Quarterman ("Murder Rooms: The Patient's Eyes") as the wily Ari, Karen David (The Colour of Magic) as the beautiful Layla, Ralf Moeller (Pathfinder) as the fierce warrior Pollux, and current six-time Ultimate Fighting Championship king Randy Couture (Invincible), holder of three heavyweight and three light heavyweight titles, as the charismatic and powerful villain Sargon.

"'The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian' is by far our most ambitious DVD Originals production ever in terms of the scope and quality of the sets, visual effects, fight sequences and stunt work," said Glenn Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Studios Home Entertainment Family Productions. "Because of the remarkable success of the DVD Originals product line, we are committed to producing a diverse slate of films based on proven franchises to help satisfy the growing demand for high quality entertainment on DVD."

The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian is written by Randall McCormick (Speed 2, Titan A.E.). David Wicht, Thomas Becker and Jörg Westerkamp are co-producers and Sean Daniels and Jim Jacks (both of The Mummy and The Scorpion King) are the executive producers. The film's production team includes director of photography Glynn Speekaert, production designer Tom Hannam, editor John Gilbert and costume designer Diana Cilliers.

The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian tells the story of the teenage warrior Mathayus and his quest for justice and honor against the evil and powerful King Sargon.

For your consideration, I would like to suggest another title for this prequel:
The Scorpion King: Rise of the Unremarkable, Straight-to-DVD, Unnecessary Sequel, Pathetic Pile of Crap-covered, Crap- filled, Crap-on-a-Stick Money Making Ploy. Thank you very much.

Honestly, Hollywood has been pulling this for years: "We're morons who can't think of an original idea, so lets take a 20 second clip from the start of a movie that gives all we need to know about a characters backstory and flush it out into a movie that will not fit with canon, people will hate, but will make us money anyways".

I, personally, will never watch this piece of crap movie. The Mummy was good; Returns was 'entertaining' - i didn't fall asleep; Scorpion King was horrid......given the trend I don't want to waste 90/120 minutes of my life and the money associated with a movie ticket/dvd rental.

This seems like a logical moneymaking use of their given material.
They've got this character which made money in a couple of movies but the future life of him is pretty much closed. But the guy had to have been a teenager, so mine something out of that.
This isn't something I would expect great things from but as stated in the press release it is getting a significant budget for direct-to-DVD so this will help other possible productions for DVD that I might be interested in. I'm sure some kid with his dad or a bunch of teens will see it at Blockbuster and give it a rent and have a fun time.
I heard Randy Couture dropped out of UFC competition to do this film. Hope he knows what he's doing.

"Scorpion Kid:Rise of a Prequel" seems like a better title.
I think this movie would be better as a seperate and stand alone movie without being a prequel to "Scorpion King".
Scorpion King does not need a prequel.

Acctually monkeyfoot Couture retired because the one guy he wanted to fight he couldn't get a match with and his heart doesnt seem to be in it anymore since he's beaten everyone. He has a few acting offers on the table aperently. He's also starring in a film called Redbelt with is about MMA i believe that I'm looking forward too.

I have seen and enjoyed all of the films, from the Mummy to the Scorpion King. A prequel of the Scorpion King, sounds interesting to me. At least we'll see what the character was like when he was a teenager.
But the thing is, The Rock needs to come back for a third outing. To finish off the trilogy, I hope they don't do a trilogy with the kid at all. Though it would be interesting to see, then the Rock would have to do the last two films. think about it, a teenager trilogy of how he began a warrior. Then the rise of the Scorpion King, if this was done right. The last two films should be back to back, keeping the Rock as the Scorpion King. Anything beyond six film's is pushing it.
Enough of prequels all ready, just make sequels instead to further the story line.
