Goddamit....cant these Holywood types come up with something original!!!
These "classics" should be offlimits to remakes, revisions or updates.......

OK, I'm very open-minded about remakes, but even I'm having troubles with this one.

If this were being made by somebody like Spielberg, I'd be looking forward to it, because then at least I would know that it's in the hands of somebody who understands the original. Derrickson's biggest movie thus far has been The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which I thought was pretty good but doesn't exactly give me any sort of confidence that he'll handle this remake properly.

The original is also very much a product of its time - specifically the 1950s Cold War era. The movie would need some serious updating to reflect current times.

The original is one of my all-time favorite movies, and while it was a product of the times, its themes of fear and alienation still hold up well today. I try to keep an open mind about remakes, but this one has me nervous because of my love of the original. I'd like to see the remake updated and instead of the threat of world war, maybe have Klaatu warn us of killing our planet (he could be the intergalactic version of Al Gore) through environmental abuse and genocide of cultures.

This is one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, and is a true classic. I really hope this guy pulls this off. snallygaster, I agree, this guy really doesn't have a body of work to judge, so I will keep my fingers crossed. The way Hollywood greenlights movies these days, any of us posters on Mania could could work for the studios, probably for a lot less money, and come up with more original ideas.

Quite, frankly I'm surprised this movie hasn't already been remade.
I'll reserve judgement until I see who they cast as Klatuu.

I hope that like the original, all the men wear hats.

Men today just don't wear enough hats.

Of course what will stretch credulity is the idea that we have enough tanks and National Guardsmen left in country to surround a flying saucer.

Some things you'll just have to suspend disbelief about.

I though Spielberg owned the rights to this movie so no one could touch it? Something in my memory tells me that is true.
