Screen Gems Scores at the PROM

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Sunday, April 13, 2008

It seems teen audiences agreed this weekend that PG-13 rated remakes of slasher cult classics was the way to go. Sony Screen Gems’ Prom Night opened up this weekend against David Ayer’s Street Kings and came out on top with a 22.7 mil payday. Not really spectacular first place numbers there but this is the waning days of the such tallies as Iron Man prepares to open up on May 2nd and kick off the summer season.

Prom opened up on just 2,700 theater prints around the nation so it points to a respectable average rate of $8,407 per showing. No budget is listed but it shouldn’t be very high.

As pointed above, David Ayer (Harsh Times) came into second place with his crime drama Street Kings gathering 12.0 mil at the box office. Fox Searchlight debuted the film in only 2,467 theaters, which has its average at $4,864. Again, no budget is listed. Obviously, this is better numbers for Ayer than Harsh Times, which managed a total domestic haul of 3.3 mil and a total foreign gross of 2.6 mil with its 956 theaters.

While Sony’s genre branch enjoyed the top spot for this report, the main distributor took 3rd with its hit crime caper 21 grabbing another 11.0 mil. The Kevin Spacey starring adaptation of the M.I.T vs. Vegas tale is already a success, having scored the top spot the previous two weekends and grossing 62.6 mil in three weeks of release. Sony’s listed the budget at just 35 mil.

Nim’s Island follows in 4th place for Fox. The children fantasy may prove profitable in the end for the studio but it’s not in a hurry and it won’t come anywhere close to Fox’s Horton receipts. Nim grabbed another 9 mil this weekend and has a two-week tally of 25.2 mil on its 3,518 theaters. Fox lists the budget at 37.

Universal’s Leatherheads dropped 51% from its previous weekend, taking in another 6.2 mil on its 2,771 theaters. This can’t be very good for the studio or director Clooney since its budget is listed at 58 mil. It has grabbed only 21.9 mil in two weeks and it still has quite a bit to go.

While Fox isn’t enjoying superb numbers with Nim’s Island, the same can’t be said for its adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who, which has pretty much been the biggest hit of the Spring 2008 season. In fact, no other film in the top 30 for this report even has the 100 mil mark while Horton is 40 mil past it. The children fantasy pulled in another 6.0 mil in its fifth week of release. Domestically, it has a 139.6 mil tally while also grabbing another 90.3 overseas. Fox lists their budget at 85.

The final debuting film of the weekend is closer to a limited release than wide theatrical bow but it still managed 7th place for the report. Miramax scored the spot with its Smart People vehicle taking in 4.2 mil on only 1,106 theaters across the nation. This has it averaging $3,797 per showing.

Paramount and DreamWorks has a lot to be horrified from its adaptation of Scott B. Smith’s The Ruins. The film dropped a whopping 59.4% in its second weekend and lands in the 8th place with only 3.2 mil. While they haven’t released a budget, no studio wants their film debuting at #5 and landing in #8 in its second week. I’m sure they saw the film doing better than its 13.4 domestic haul as well. Clearly not enjoying the same success as the teen centered Prom Night.

The same failure goes to MGM’s Superhero Movie, which also isn’t enjoying the same success as previous features in the whole spoof genre. In its third week, it managed the 9th place and grabbed only 3.1 mil. Domestically, it has only 21.2 mil while no budget is listed.

Paramount takes the final 10th spot with its Owen Wilson comedy Drillbit Taylor 2.0 mil at the box office. This film has been another ho-hum experience for studio executives with it grossing only 28.4 mil in four weeks of release.

This just keeps adding to studios belief in using these 20 year olds playing teens and keeping it pg13 to rake in the money. Well they are in the money making business afterall.
For me it was Street Kings. I don't care what people say Keanu is the man. The movie is somewhat predictable but it was still entertaing and one of the better and gritty cop films in a while IMO.
Also caught The Ruins, not bad but not great as far as horror flicks go. It was more gory than scary.
Hate to be a hater but I'm glad to see Leatherheads bombing, when will studios realize that Clooney isn't the draw the media makes him out to be. Unless you're targeting the AARP crowd, no offense to them.
Looking forward to The Forbidden Kingdom, not a huge fan of either of these two but I need something to quench my thirst for some fantasy/action film.

Its a conspiracy cause when I went to see BANKJOB yesterday the kids going to see it were between 9 and 14. I think it so the parents can get all ages out of the house.

THE BANK JOB is the best film currently in theaters and I think it is even in more theaters now then before.

Saw a great preview for Daniel Craig's film coming out in October or November. I think it was called DEFIANT--not sure though. But I think its an Oscar contender. 3 guys escape the nazi's and go to rescue more. Daniel Craig's accent is awesome and incredible. He hasnt given a bad performance and I doubt he ever will. But I won't see Golden Compass and I am curious about invasion.

Plus Midnight Meat Train and Forbidden Kingdom look awesome.

THE BANK JOB is superb.

Prom Night was just too bland for me; it wasn't scary. It wasn't horrible, but it was just there; no scares and no gore. For me, it was just like the remake of The Fog, watered down "horror" with the pretty boys and girls of the moment.

Street Kings was better than I'd though it would be. I wasn't expecting much, and although wiseguy is right about it being a little predictable, it was passable entertainment.

I agree with Sonyman about Daniel Craig's WWII movie; I'm really looking forward to that one.

Prom Night was much more thriller than horror. There wasn't a "boogeyman" quality to it since you know from the beginning who the bad guy is. It was a good, no-thinking-required bit of entertainment that was fun...

As for the gore and rating......blood doesn't always mean good, ya know....Look at one of the #1 rated horror films ever - Texas Chainsaw Massacre....nearly bloodless, but still scary as hell....

Well, I have no desire to see yet another teen horror remake which was probably better the first time around, when all they added was saline enhanced chicks and different soundtrack.
I`m definitely going to check out Street Kings. I like David Ayer and Keanu is the man!
Yeah, I saw that Defiant trailer awhile back. It does look pretty damn good.
Has anyone seen 21? Is it worth checking out?

Is this new news? I can't tell since the frakin site changed again. Revert REVERT Revert back please!

I agree with the Revert comment. This new look is no where near the quality of the last design. Shouldnt the site be tested on all browsers to ensure it works correctly before going live?
