Scribe Avary Arrested for Manslaughter

Normally, I wouldn't cover this kind of subject here at Mania but this guy is involved with a few genre-related projects so I'll pass it along. Scribe Roger Avary has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence after a crash killed a man and injured his wife in Ventura county. Avary, who just finished duties as writer & producer for Beowulf, has been slated to write and direct the upcoming Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which was slated for a 2010 theatrical release.

Here's the details from the Associated Press:

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary was arrested Sunday on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence after a Ventura County car crash that killed a man and injured Avary's wife, authorities said.

Avary, 42, was the driver in the single-car collision shortly after midnight in Ojai, said Captain Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Killed in the accident was Andreas Zini, 34, a resident of Italy who was apparently visiting the couple.

Avary's wife Gretchen, 40, was ejected from the car and found in the road by deputies, Bonfiglio said. She was hospitalized in stable condition.

Avary was booked but later released on $50,000 bail, Bonfiglio said. He did not know whether Avary has hired an attorney.

Avary won an Academy Award for writing "Pulp Fiction," and recently co-wrote the epic "Beowulf." He and his wife live in Ojai, a popular artists' colony and tourist destination 14 miles north of Ventura.

This is sad news, and I don't wish it upon anyone. Even talented Hollywood types are still just people prone to make mistakes, like us all. I do hope however that he is afforded no special treatment due to his success. Drinking and driving is stupid. No ifs ands or buts about it. It kills too many people to be treated lightly as it is for many celebs in our times.
p.s. before I get a backlash I said MANY not all.

I dislike drunk drivers as they don't give a damn about those who they might harm or kill. The laws need to be changed in order to levy harsher penalties against drunk drivers, especially if someone is killed. The charge of murder, not manslaughter, should be the law. And when someone is seriously injured, that should be attempted murder.

That said, it is a shame that a talented writer such as Roger Avery...the real voice behind the only good, to great, films Quentin Tarantino ever made (and sometimes uncredited) would put himself, and others, in this horrible circumstance.

Well said metalwater. I still find it amazing that well educated and informed people still do this. Do as metalwater said above and I assure you these type of accidents would come to a crawl. They mostly happen now because people in general don't have to worry about a real harsh penalty.

Unfortunately, I think it is going to take an incident like having an A-List celeb (of the Julia Roberts/George Clooney level) hitting and killing an Meals-on-Wheel's-volunteering mother and her infant child before people stand up and pay attention. I don't know why people still continue to drink and drive when you can't go a day without hearing in the news about someone getting killed because of a drunk driver. I think people have that "It can't happen to me" mentality...

I still find it amazing that well educated and informed people still do this.

That's the reason why this happens: Because most of them are well educated and informed, and they tend to think that their intellect will save them or "kick in"

That said...Metalwater, if you get a petition going...I'll sign.

You know, for writing some of the coolest stories you would think that this guy was not STUPID!! STUPID, STUPID!!

You know what, he deserves jail time. Honestly, wtf are you thinking? That it is ok to drive drunk!?!? $50, 000 BAIL!! YOU know how many taxi cab rides that would have cost!?!

STUPID! Seriously people, dont drink and drive, it is fucking stupid and people die.

Dumbass. Why does everyone insist they can operate a 4,000 pound vehicle whilst intoxicated?

Joining the choir.

Drinking and driving has nowhere near the kind of penalties it requires.

I have zero sympathy for anyone who drinks then gets behind the wheel. Zero.

I JUST DON"T GET IT! Give the car keys to
someone else, call a cab. Whatever. Just
don't get behind the wheel drunk. I've
known too many people who have been
killed or injured by drunk drivers.

I agree with some of you. These people have so much Damn money that they can afford to have a Chauffeur drive them in a Limo (or other fancy/non fancy car) wherever they freakin want, Drunk or not. I just dont understand. Words fail to describe the Stupidity on their part.
