Scribe Penn Takes on THE ARGONAUTS

Yesterday in the Wardogs news, we touched upon Hollywood frequently competing with the same story theme at the same time. Today, we have another bit to pass along involving the Greek Legend The Argonauts, which will have two films touching upon the subject.  Screenwriter Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men) is writing and will produce The Argonauts for 20th Century Fox along with producer John Davis.

Plot Concept: The story is based on Penn's original take on the classic Greek tale. In Greek mythology, the Argonauts were a band of heroic sailors who, in the years before the Trojan War, accompanied Jason to Colchis in his quest to find the Golden Fleece. The Argonauts name comes from the sailors' ship, the Argo.

Meanwhile, DreamWorks is also developing a project, also titled The Argonauts, about a group of treasure hunters who discover the wreck of the mythological sunken ship thought to have been captained by Jason, and are transported back in time to ancient Greece.

I've seen the original version, the one that 20th century is doing is remaking...I want to see the DreamWorks version because that sounds fun and different...Just my opinion though...Of course I will go see them both if done well...

Man this is some fucked up bullshit. Add anothe movie to list about swords & sandals while those bastards at Sony sit on their frakkin asses instead of putting the motherfrakin God of War into the front burner and release that shit!

Jason is also in God of War and he gets owned by Kratos!!

Anyway, I'll go check this flick out when it's released.

I knew this was coming with all the new sword and sandal movies. What I am really pleased about is that the Zak Penn script sounds like an original take on the myth, not a movie remake like the new Clash of the Titans. This new one is its own film not stealing the title and plot from the original Ray Harryhausen classic like the Titans one is.

The Dreamworks story sounds pretty cool, too. Modern guys suddenly transported back in time and having to deal with Medusa and the like. Kind of sounds like the next step for a National Treasure movie.

I agree with monkeyfoot in that they both sound interesting and are at least different takes on the story.

Also what I read about Fox's version is that it's supposed to be nmuch more graphic with the violence and nudity. Telling the story the way it should be while DW's definitely sounds like a family adventure sort of film.

Looking forward to both.

Hey, I enjoyed both Dante's Peak and Volcano. I likeed both Deep Impact and Armeggedon. There is no reason two genre films of the same topic can't get made. Although, I think one is going to have to change the name. I dig Zack Penn, so I would most likely see his, but depending on how they look in a trailer will be the clincher for me. And I did enjoy the made for tv version of this movie back in 2000 with Jason "Randal Pink Floyd" London as Jason, so who knows how it could turn out.

The competing themes can work, depending on their respective quality. Ultimately, that's the greatest deciding factor. If they're both good, they'll probably both do well.

I love sword and sandal movies so the more the better, but why can't they just make one of each. Though I was ticked that they never made teh other Alexander the Great movie, because the one they made sucked and had him totally wrong. For one thing he wasn't gay.
