When Universal went looking for someone to write its upcoming SPY HUNTER movie, they decided to go for a duo that's already spent some time working with tricked-out wheels. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writing team behind 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, have been hired to drive Midway's classic video game franchise onto the silver screen.

WWE wrestler-turned-leading man Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is still attached to play the film's hero, a fighter pilot named Alec Sects who is recruited to join the International Espionage Services and hunt down enemy spies. The film is being produced by Adrian Askarieh and Chuck Gordon, the team also behind HEROBEAR & THE KID, based on the comic book of the same title.

In its 1980s incarnation SPY HUNTER was a popular arcade game, and then two years ago Midway relaunched it as a next gen console game and the result was an instant best-seller. Universal then announced last summer that it had acquired the film rights for the property and were developing it as a $100 million dollar event picture.

With the FAST AND FURIOUS sequel's writing team now onboard, the promise of plenty of car chases, smoke screens and oil slicks, and the WWE's most popular man behind the Interceptor's wheel, SPY HUNTER is starting to rev its engine and shift into high gear. Now if only we could get a look inside the weapons van...
