SDCC: Batman: The Brave and the Bold panel

Hijinks, hilarity and musical mayhem

Panel attendees received paper Bat-Mite masks upon entering the hall. This, along with a clip from the show featuring Bat-Mite explaining the relevance of a humorous Batman, set the tone for what was one of the best panels I attended all weekend.

Producer James Tucker and producer/story editor Michael Jelenic were joined by Deidrich Bader (Batman), John DiMaggio (Aquaman), James Arnold Taylor (Green Arrow, Guy Gardener), voice director Andrea Romano and the Executive VP of Warner Bros. Animation, Sam Register. To say that everyone on the panel was enthusiastic about their job would be something of an understatement as they cracked wise, complimented each other's talents and professed their love of what they do for a living.

Deidrich Bader referred to the role as his "favorite ever" and Andrea Romano explained her job as "a play date with actors". John DiMaggio had the crowd and the panel in stitches the entire time and as fans of the show would expect, threw in Aquaman's favorite quote, "Outrageous!" from time to time as well as a mean Ted Knight impersonation. They explained that its the lack of tone that makes the show so enjoyable to work on, which in turn makes it so fun to watch.

But you don't want to hear about all that, you want news. And they gave us some.

Volume One of the series will be available on DVD August 25, with Volume Two set to appear on store shelves November 10. And if you were wondering about upcoming guest stars, heres a few to look out for:

Enemy Ace
Haunted Tank
GI Robot
Detective Chimp (which received a huge round of applause)
Captain Marvel and the entire Marvel Family (which received an even bigger round of applause!)
Vixen
Firestorm
The Metal Men
Doom Patrol
B'wana Beast

Oh yeah.

An all-new, never before seen episode aired titled "Mayhem of the Music Meister" featuring Neal Patrick Harris as the voice of the villain. The episode featured cameos from Gorilla Grodd, the Clock King, Black Manta, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Aquaman and... everybody. Every single character who has appeared on the show made at least a brief cameo in this episode.

Oh, and did I mention it's a Broadway-style musical? Singing, dancing, chorus lines... and yeah, Batman sings. It was awesome and the entire room was cheering and clapping the entire time.

The panel ended with a clip from an upcoming episode in which Batman alumnus Julie Newmar voices Bruce's mother in an origin sequence. Kids asked questions and Deidrich Bader and John DiMaggio answered in character and a special round of applause was reserved for all the kids under the age of 11 in the room.

Gotham City doesn't seem like such a dark and scary place these days, and we're all better off for it. If you liked Season One of The Brave and the Bold, you're gonna love Season Two!

Sounds great. It just bothers me though how studios chop up cartoon series into volume 1 and volume 2 just to get more money out of us. I wiill still sadly probably buy this, but it still upsets me the way things are done anymore.

I'd love to see and Brave and Bold ediytion of Detecive Chimp. He was awesome in that series with the Seven Knights or something. Had Zatanna and Blue Demon in it. He'd work great in the Band B world.
