SDCC: First Look at Hulk Vs. Wolverine

Finally, in Hall H, with its multiple HD screens, there was something to watch other than trailers of movies. Lionsgate and Marvel debuted their Hulk vs. DVD at the San Diego Comic Con on multiple giant screens. Hulk vs. Wolverineis the first in a two story DVD highlighting the Hulk. It is a retelling of the first time the Incredible Hulk and Wolverine ever came face to face (from The Incredible Hulk issue 181).The second part of the DVD is currently in production and titled Hulk vs. Thor.

Outside of five minutes of the film, according to Craig Kyle: Marvel's Senior VP of Creative Development, and co-writer of the film, it is a completed work. If Warner Brother’s Batman Gotham Knight disappointed you, fear not because Hulk vs. Wolverine was a savage brutal romp through the Canadian Forest, the Weapon X program and delivered a finish that was perfect.

Robert Trate: Hulk vs. Wolverine was a kick ass animated film. It didn’t pull any punches. Obviously this not a film for the family to watch, this one is for the fans.

Craig Kyle: Fans ask for that and we do our best. We face many challenges with this job. We want to give everything to all people but we can’t. It’s not the reality of this gig. Our hearts are always in that place. Because we went into a younger direction for one of these (Next Avengers) it allowed us to go in the opposite direction for the other (Hulk vs.). Both of those films will show the breadth of what we can do in animation. I still think we can have fun even if it is a younger geared property.

Robert Trate: At the panel you mentioned that there is a Planet Hulk Animated film in the works. How much of Greg Pak’s story will it encompass?

Craig Kyle: It’s a huge amount of material. We look at all of it and we try and find the best translation. Doing the exact translation from the books is really tough because you like this and he loves that. You are getting into so many passionate scenes and moments and just messing with it because you have to compress it and decide what you can lose and still deliver. It’s a miserable place to be. It’s really hard. We are going to do our best. It will be a Doctor Strange translation and Frank (Paur) will be helming it.

Robert Trate: Is there any story arc or graphic novel in the Marvel Universe that you would consider a dream project?

Craig Kyle: I would love to do the Phoenix Saga. I am a hardcore X fan and that just speaks to me.

Robert Trate: Since Hulk vs. will be released on Blu-Ray will there be any special features that might include the comic (Incredible Hulk 181) playing out besides the cartoon?

Craig Kyle: These are all ideas that we are discussing. As you saw at the panel there are a lot of moments were you can really catch things. So you can literally stop the footage and see the grabs and how they match. We haven’t planned anything official. You will absolutely see the behind the scenes voice work which is really exciting because literally you see Fred and Steve (Blum) as Hulk and Wolverine. Steve throws his arms down when he is doing Wolverine and Fred is just a bear in the room. It’s just amazing to see how physical they are and then watch their performances. You’ll see a side of it we haven’t done yet which is really exciting. We have some great animatics as well. We want to do a deep, deep study on this new release because it is so fan focused. We’ll bring the best we can possibly do on this disc.

Craig praised the performance of Nolan North as Dead Pool (the character’s first animated appearance) and Dead Pool did steal a lot of the show at the panel. Hulk vs. Wolverine, in his opinion was a great way to showcase the character that has a very small loyal fan base. He spoke of Hulk vs. Thor and how different it would be from Hulk vs. Wolverine. The scale will be more epic in style and reminiscent of the Jack Kirby’s Thor days. He promises it to be a gods vs. monsters tale with all of Asgard as the battlefield. Check out the trailer for Hulk vs. Wolverine on Marvel.com here.

Yes Batman:Gotham Knight did disappoint. When is this film coming out?

Is it just me or does the Hulk/Wolverine animation kinda look shitty?

just you irascible ;)

I like it, think it looks great.

Hanso, I also (NOT AN ANIME FAN) loved Gotham Knight.

I don't buy into hype machines, except your grassroots TDK campign, so I wasn't dissapointed.
I've read everyones comment on Gotham Knight, but I just really liked the new take on The old Hero.

I enjoyed GK as well gauley. It wasn't The Animated Series to be certain but I thought the shorts were way better than The Batman cartoon that just wrapped up.

The Hulk Vs. looks promising. Don’t have a problem with the animation. Actually really like that first still with Hulk reflected in Wolvie’s claws. Hope the end result really is geared to us adult fans.

What’s the deal on Next Avengers? That like Avengers Babies or something? That shot is leaving me flat big time.
