Director McG spoke in glowing terms of his leading man Christian Bale during the press conference for their upcoming Terminator: Salvation at the San Diego Comic Con this Saturday. Bale has attracted unwanted attention from the tabloids in recent weeks, and McG was quick to come to the actor's defense.
"He's the most professional, passionate actor you're going to find. It's just that simple. He is all about the work. He loves his wife, he loves his child, and he loves being an actor. He's not interested in materialistic things. He wants to come to work prepared, and… I mean I can't just go 'Christian, go camera left.' Chris is going to talk to me about what went into the decision to go camera left, which is wonderful. It provides the elegant opposition you want. You don't want people saying, 'yeah whatever, tell me what to do and we'll do it.' [The entire cast] challenges you all the time… and Christian sets an excellent example in that way. He's a big-hearted, good guy. I've worked with a lot of people and that's just who he is."
McG was joined by principle cast members Common , Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Moon Youngblood in promoting the picture. Bale was not in attendance due to publicity commitments for an obscure art house film currently in theaters.
Terminator: Salvation is scheduled for release May 22, 2009.
Of course McG praises Bale. His presence alone guarantees a a certain amount of interest. Still, the pressure's on this McG fellow. He HAS to deliver the goods with the Terminator trilogy he has in mind. That he was given this franchise to work with and Bale as John Conner present the opportunity of a lifetime, if he screws it up that's all she wrote for his career.
"an obscure art house film currently in theaters" I think hanso might have mentioned this once or twice, perhaps I'll check it out (Yeah, like I haven't already).
"It provides the elegant opposition you want. You don't want people saying, 'yeah whatever, tell me what to do and we'll do it.' [The entire cast] challenges you all the time…"
Which in my mind translates to, "It's so obvious that I don't know what I'm doing that the actors have to step in and save the movie, cos I did direct Fantastic Four after all."
You always have to blame the person that wrote the script...McG don't need anyone to tell him what to do on a set, he has made enough movies that he already knows what's up, I have also heard Spielberg say the same thing about Tom Hanks when they worked together and I have not heard anyone say that Spielberg does not know what the hell he is doing because of the working relationships he has had with actors in the past...Anyways, this is going to be way cool IMO so heres hoping for the best...
I've yet to hear a single piece of actual evidence that Bale assaulted anybody. Given the shape he's in, one would think that if he assaulted somebody the evidence would be incontrovertible. It's rarely rosy when it comes to family relationships for child actors, and I'm thinking this whole assault allegation is a verbal argument blown way out of proportion.
