SDCC: Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe Hands On Party
By: Edward GoodsmithDate: Wednesday, July 30, 2008
I had the exciting opportunity to sit down with some hands on time with this newest, and most groundbreaking iteration in the Mortal Kombat series. I was hanging with my good friends from the Totally Rad Show, and one of the designers who helped us get used to the controls. The night started quite, people seemed to be in there respective shells. Fortunately, as the night wore on, and the players continued to be over served, the room got more relaxed. By our fifth game screams of defeat, and yells of victory could be heard all over the room. It was like Mortal Kombat of days gone by, and a welcome memory from my childhood.
If it wasn’t already clear, this game is a blast. I can see a younger me back in my friend’s basement, up all night, trying to learn the intricacies of every new character. It was old school Mortal Kombat at it’s best, and the introduction of the DC Universe characters was a welcome twist. It also looked absolutely beautiful on the 360, it looked like the game has had a total face lift.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t that much to rave about in this game. Sure, it was a fun to play, and I had fun. But, there was nothing revolutionary about it. It just didn’t do anything completely new, and I just don’t see myself, or anyone except the die-hard Mortal Kombat fan, sitting down and playing for 8 hours straight. The fun factor was already starting to ware off in the little amount of time I played it. It’s simply too repetitive.
Fans of the series are sure to love this new version, and I sure as hell had a blast. But I don’t see myself waiting in line to pick it up. It strikes me as the type of game that somebody flips on during a party and everyone has a blast playing. So, if you’re a mega fan, then watch for this game to drop on November 3rd, 2008.
