The producers of the new alien abduction film Skyline stressed their ability to deliver grade-A special effects without funding from the studio system. The sibling director team of Colin and Greg Strause own their own effects studio, Hydraulix, which gives them access to top-level technology without costing a great deal of money.
“We’ve worked on so many movies, and we’ve seen where there’s been horrific inefficiencies in the way films are done,” Colin told a packed house at the San Diego Comic Con. “Also, we’ve always embraced technology, our company has always thrived on being on the bleeding edge of everything… [New cameras] require a fraction of the lighting… which means you don’t have to have big crews.”
“[That] allows us to take risks,” brother Greg added. “Risky ideas are the cool ideas, the ideas that the fans respond to the most. We’re able to take those risks because we’re working on an independent movie scale.”
Their film--largely shot in a single marina condominium complex--was independently financed before being picked up by Universal. It’s scheduled for release this November.
I might be more impressed with the claims of high quality visuals and whatnot if we had a trailer to back up the claims.
