SECRET INVASION SAGA #1

By: Tim Janson
Review Date: Thursday, March 06, 2008

The Secret Invasion Saga is a free preview for kickoff of next month’s Secret Invasion event, Marvel’s big storyline for 2008. It’s funny the way both Marvel and DC Comics both have their tried and true storylines for their major events. With DC it’s the mega-powerful foes that threaten to destroy the universe such as we’ve seen in the various Crisis saga, Zero Hour, Armageddon, etc…For Marvel, they like to go more for the clandestine type of events…Secret Wars, Secret Invasion, Civil War, Acts of Vengeance. They both seem to go to the well a bit too often but in most cases, they deliver entertaining storylines, continuity gaffes aside.

I have to give Marvel credit here for making the Secret Invasion saga a free book. Oh, it’s not out of benevolence, of course. They want to draw as many readers as possible into the Secret Invasion and what better way than to give away a 32 page preview, recapping all of the recent Skrull events. Besides, it’s a tough economy out there so if you can get something for free then take it by all means!

Now, this issue can be summed up as, “For those of you who have just joined us…” as it recaps not only the recent events, such as the revealing of Elektra and Black Bolt as Skrulls, but also recaps the entire Marvel Comics history of the Skrull race and the encounters that the various superheroes have had with the evil race over the past forty plus years. They are one of the oldest villains in the Marvel Universe, making their first appearance in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #2 way back in 1962. This initial encounter between the Skrulls and the F.F. is summarized and even done in the style of Jack Kirby artwork…The Super Skrull, the first of his kind to not only be able to imitate the look of a superhero, but also their powers is also noted. This leads into one of the most famous, and still one of the greatest storylines in Marvel Comics’ History, The Kree-Skrull War, originally published in Avengers Vol. 1 # 93 – 97 in 1971.

The entire Skrull history is covered and even if you don’t plan to read the Secret Invasion series, this is really a nicely done book. It’s nice to see Marvel embrace their long, rich history. Too many of today’s egotistical comic writers seem only concerned with re-writing or even totally ignoring the past. A well-done book and I have to admit, it is getting me jacked for next month’s Secret Invasion #1.

Is the "A" rating due to the price? Kurt A. apparently has deep doubts about this mega-event (as evidenced in his recent Comicscape).

I give Marvel credit: I think they're coming up with some pretty solid story ideas that are building upon each other.

But one of the serious flaws I am seeing is the dreaded continuity. Some would say ignore continuity, but Marvel thrives upon it, so to discard it on a whim is silly.

Take, for example, the situation with Black Bolt and Quicksilver: Quicksilver's story ran fairly well between the pages of X-Factor and the Silent War mini-series. Black Bolt, of course, was seen with Silent War as well, but it's been hard to figure out exactly where that series takes place with the events of Civil War & WWH. And nobody seems interested in straightening things out.

This Skrull "Secret Invasion" crap is just another way to crap on Marvel history.

If, as Iron Man suggests, Black Bolt has been a Skrull infilitrator since the Kree-Skrull War, all stories with the Inhumans become at least somewhat tarnished.

While I'd love to say that why Scott was such a dip under Morrison on forward (including the "falling for Emma" crap and creating the assassin group X-Force) is because he's a Skrull ... or why Doctor Strange can't detect the Skrulls and suddenly forgot what Chaos Magic is was due to him being a Skrull, that's just a cop-out.

I think the only way I'll be happy is if I find out Bendis and Quesada are Skrulls - making them illegal aliens in this country, committing acts of terrorism on comic books in general, and for the one time in my life I'd put my principles aside and back the Bush-Cheney Administrations methods of deals with illegal alien terrorists.

Hey guys, Kurt here. I didn't write this review. Tim did. My doubts still stand.

I picked this up too. I'm not usually one to read Marvel books but this looked interesting. So my big question is, have they located the real Electra and black Bolt yet or are they dead?

Personally I dont really see what all the fuss is over, unless the "SEcret Invasion" books cross over into a host of other titles and you all get suckered into buying all those too... I wont be buying them.. .just the 8 issues... I dont really care about crapping all over the Marvel Universe since its a bunch of shit anyway. LOL!

Hi Kurt! Tim here! I actually have as many doubts as you. The "A" grade was for three reasons:

a) It's free...

b) It does a great job of recapping 45 years of Skrull history including noting some great storylines from the past such as the Kree-Skrull war.

C) It also does a good job of recapping recent events in the marvel Universe to get readers up to speed before the storyline starts next month.

That said....this could very well fall on its face. let me say that I am not a Bendis fan at all and in fact had a nice run-in with him on his site a year ago or so. he and Millar have done more harm than good in my opinion. But...Bendis didn't write this issue. For me this was a trip down memory lane I guess which is why I liked it. In point of fact, this issue will have no bearing on the mini-series. So I hope I explained that well enough! ;-)

LOL. Maybe that's on purpose mckracken. Any chance Mephisto's a skrull?

If Mephisto turned out to be a skrull my head would explode, and not in the good way. Anyway I'll pick this up, and I have to say I'm looking forward to the Secret Invasion.

My main hope is that it sets all the Initiative business to bed so that someone can come along and fix Spider-Man.
