Segal Addresses Rumors of SHAZAM

There have been some rumors flying around on whether Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam will be a straight forward comedy or something a bit darker. Director Peter Segal, who's next project Get Smart arrives this summer, had a chance to address the rumors and let FirstShowing know that while the latest script for the comic adaptation is in, there's still some way to go before shooting begins. Actor Dwayne Johnson is already on board as the character Black Adam after a poll was taken on whether fans wanted him for that role or the Shazam superhero.

Here's what the director had to say to FS:

In regards to comedic elements of the story and how it will play, Segal confirms that they're NOT going to turn it into a light-hearted comedy. He mentions that they "really want to pay attention to the roots of the comic" and that there is an "innate humanity" in it and they "can't handle that strictly dramatically." Of course, when the story is about a 13 year old boy who becomes a 28 year old superhero but is still 13 on the inside, that needs to be comedic in some way or it just won't work. Segal says that he wouldn't want to even see Captain Marvel if they try and treat it entirely dramatically (neither would I), and "that's why I think there's room for [Shazam] in a crowded comic book marketplace right now, because there is no story like it."

As a final statement regarding the comic, Segal wants to make sure he sets the record straight on Shazam for all of the fans:

"A lot of people were asking which, is fine, but I just want to sort of set the record straight as you know, it's not - it's going to be something you resemble, it's not going to be something that people are shocked and have no idea where it came from. I'm not trying to turn this into something it isn't."

Though the Rock can sometimes act childish (thanks to his showmanship training at WWE/WWF), he should ask Tom Hank (who starred in BIG, about a kid who wished to be an adult and came true for a while) about being 13 again.

Either that or Jennifer Garner.

oriongreenguy, D.Johnson is playing Black Adam not Captain Marvel.
Now they need to sign Patrick Warburton to the title role and at least IMO they'll have those two roles cast perfectly.
Always happy to hear that they're not turning a possible franchise like this into a comedy. Of course it'll or should have its moments of comedy, I mean a 13 y.o. turned into a superhero has a lot of opportunities at being funny just not a straight up comedy.

From the headine, I thought it was Steven Segal....whew....I like Steven Segal, but not for this...lol,,,,,I think this sounds fun. I have always liked Peter Segal's movies. He seems to know comdey well.....and Orion, I agree Tom Hanks and Jennifer Garner both did a really good job of acting as a kid......but so did Judge Rehinhold in Vice Versa.

This sounds like it's veering towards becoming like the horror that was "Star Kid"! THE HORROR! THE HORROR!

I think you are dead on about Patrick Warburton and I am surprised at myself for not thinking about him previously for the role.

warburton as captain marvel = perfect, speaking of warburton they should make THE TICK into a movie with all these superhero flicks being made these days, besides the live action series was good.

Notafan what were you reading? It says it will be close to its roots and that it won't be light hearted alot. It says it will be funny and I can appreciate since I am so fucked in the head. My mom went into the hospital the day before I was 13 and died the day after fathers day which was the day after my dad's birthday. Saying it twisted me is an understatement but it also made me more human and gave me the super power ability to laugh at the bullshit that is life. And since Billy Batson lossed his parents and and became the ward of an abusive uncle(depending on which storyline they use) the kid needs to be a bit twisted as well.

I just hope they do not make Black Adam his uncle.

Have you seen this guys cred.? He has never made a non-comedy, ever! So it is unlikely that he not gonna try to turn this into a comedy somehow. Notice he said "light-hearted" comedy, so that doesn't rule out a comedy altogether. Comedy is what the man knows and does, as far as i can tell, so unless this is his big break from the comedic genre, expect a comedy....And of course they'll try to make Black Adam his uncle. It's what they do! And About the whole MOM thing, UM I have absolutely no response to that.

Well Marvel has always been a smart ass even in DK2, he has to be. And remember Favreau is usually in the comedy genres and Robert Downey jr always plays goof at some pmaoint which we already have seen in the Iron Man preview.

Warburton might work but he did say Marvel was to be 28 and Patrick in his 40's I think.
As for the mom stor I am not looking for sympathy or a sorry for your loss. I just go by the line Michael Keaton said in Dream Team-

ITS GOOD TO BE YOUNG AND INSANE.

They should let us cast Capt Marvel also. I don't know the comic that well just the concept. I vaguely remember the tv show. I wish they would show shows like that on tvland. I can't believe they would be that expensive on rights. I think Titan from American Gladiators would be a great choice. Just hire a great acting coach in the budget.

Pretty funny how Steven Segal pops up in comments. First Punisher now this. I bet he would kill to be in these projects.
