The Black Box (Article) - 3/27/2007 4:58:21 AM

In defense of Sega: 1, the Dreamcast went up against PS2, not the original PlayStation. It was Saturn vs PS1. Incidentally, Saturn had 'NetLink', but that's generally pushed to the side, along with the MegaModem and Sega Channel. 2, Although not specifically for Phantasy Star Online, Sega *did* sell optional keyboards and mice for Dreamcast. There were also several third-party adapters to allow you to use PC keyboards and mice (PS/2 was the preferred configuration). Sega also found more to do with keyboards than just internet; see 'Typing of the Dead'. 3, Nobody online? Bear in mind, there was almost a full 15 months between when Dreamcast was released, and when PS2 hit store shelves. For 15 months, everybody had or wanted a Dreamcast; not just the Sega faithful, but also all the hardware whores who have to have whatever is the newest thing out there; and my many weekends that went missing thanks to 'Quake III Arena' online can attest to the fact that people were online. (Why is 'Quake III Arena' STILL the only game that allowed console and PC games to play together?)

Sam Neill knows nothing about "Jurassic Park 4" (Article) - 3/8/2007 4:43:14 AM

Where's the "news" discussing how Michael Crichton feels about JP4? (Just sayin' that I'd hardly consider this to be news.) Man, the whole thing is so tired -- JP was a phenomenal book which translated into a great movie; after that, it went downhill quick: "The Lost World" read like a quickly-conceived cash-in, which the film then couldn't even be bothered to follow beyond the first 25 minutes or so. If you want to think JP3 was great, that's fine, but in that case, JP4 should have Jean-Claude Van Damme kickboxing with the raptors or something: it'd have about as much to offer plot-wise, and give you just about as much of an action fix.

Sony â%u20AC%u201C A Giant Toppled (Article) - 2/19/2007 10:17:25 AM

Would the sort of emulation that you're talking about be legal? Yes -- not only did the judge in the Bleem! case (and the Bleem!cast case) side with Bleem!, but it's a legal decision that dates back to Atari v. Mattel, when Mattel created an adapter that would allow Atari 2600 games to be played on Intellivision. Courts have long believed that as long as no copyrights on the games are being infringed, there's no harm in allowing said games to boot on other systems. Would Sony ever consider actually taking that route? I seriously doubt it at this point; I think they'd consider it, but they also would have to think about the court costs associated, and after repeatedly filing suit on two companies (Bleem! and Lik-sang) to drive them out of business, as well as Blu-ray's general failure, and that of the PS3, I don't think Sony would have the financial ability to stand up to, say, Microsoft using Sony's own bullying tactics.

"Heroes: The Fix" Images on web (Article) - 1/25/2007 1:08:24 PM

No, gladatir -- that would be "baited breath". The "bated" in "bated breath" is a contraction of "abated", a synonym of "decreased" or "reduced". So, it's essentially a variation on one being breathless with anticip..... ("say it!") ation.

David Tennant to leave "Doctor Who" (Article) - 1/7/2007 2:15:07 PM

Must say, I've been slacking on my Torchwood watching....haven't sat down to watch an episode since "Cyberwoman"; not that I didn't like the show (it was pretty good up to that point - I understand it gets a whole lot better), I just haven't had the time to watch any of the other episodes yet. Also very much looking forward to getting a chance to watch Sarah Jane Adventures (or whatever it's called now -- "Sarah Jane Investigates" just had a great ring to it...why change the title to something less-interesting-sounding?) As far as Tennant goes: we know we've got at least one more season out of him, and if this past season (or anything else I've ever seen him in) is any indication, whether it's his last or not, he'll make the most of it.

Well, it certainly appears the BBC are fine with it being added to canon; in addition to the previous radio dramas which have featured Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor, he's also got a current run on Radio7, which definitely does make him the longest-lasting of any active-Doctor incarnation. There's no disputing it's canonocity, it seems; while Eccleston was not directly referred to as being the 9th, Tennant has fairly clearly stated he's the 10th (his "half-a dozen times" reference to Sarah Jane's mentioning he's regenerated since she last saw him); since we saw McCoy regenerate into McGann, and know that Tennant is, in fact, the 10th, there seems to be no way around the Beeb accepting only part of 'The Enemy Within' as canon.

Common fan-belief (which often gets incorporated into canon) is that the Doctor (or any Time-Lord, really) can change species during regeneration. Thus, it could be argued that it was simply the 8th Doctor who is "half-human...on my mother's side". An acknowledgment of this could be viewed as having been placed in "The Runaway Bride", the latest Christmas special; Donna responds to the Doctor's question of if she's human with, "Yeah; what - is that optional?" He himself responds with, "It is for me."

if I remember my Who history correctly, both Davidson and Colin Baker were kicked out of the roles. As far as "The Enemy Within" (the TV movie), I loved it when it first aired, and still watch it occasionally; I don't really understand what all the complaints about it are...yeah, it's a bit cheesy in some spots, but even the current run has a tendency to go for the cheese occasionally. (Aliens who literally wear human suits that zip up?) And, yeah, the continuity got messed with a bit by the movie, but Doctor Who's continuity has never been that strong to begin with. (Has anyone ever bothered to sit down and write a series bible?)

More "Lost in Space" films? (Article) - 12/31/2006 11:00:50 AM

I thought it was a great movie; i was desperately hoping it wouldn't be too similar to the TV show, and I was right. I would have to rank it among sci-fi flicks that never got the recognition they deserved (chief among them, 'Titan A.E.'); I would love to see some sequels, as long as they deal with the passage of time between the first and second films responsibly (i.e. use the entire cast and just explain that X amount of years have passed since last we saw them, or actually have the difference in appearance/behavior be a plot motivator, rather than just recasting the kids and hope nobody notices).

David Tennant to leave "Doctor Who" (Article) - 12/30/2006 9:40:12 PM

Not that I'm in a hurry to see Tennant leave (I'd actually like to see him outlast Tom Baker), but it would be interesting to see exactly how the Doctor lives that 12th life, knowing (or at least believing) that once he dies, he shall become the Valeyard, and to see exactly how all that plays out from the other side. And maybe then after the 13th life, we discover that he is the Other?
