Box Office Report

SEMI PRO Scores Small Victory

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Sunday, March 02, 2008

It was a rather slow week at the box office and the numbers show. There’s no movie pulling in numbers in the 20 mil range and only 2 films which crossed the 10 mil range. Still, we’re reaching the end of the slow season if last year’s March is any indication. Who knows if this coming month is as successful as last year’s 300, Wild Hogs and TMNT but 10,000 B.C, Doomsday and Horton Hears a Who could have a shot at it. Or perhaps not.

Whatever the case, let’s get to the here and now. As expected, Semi-Pro is the number 1 film of this box office report, having been launched in 3,121 theaters across the nation and clocking in at a streamlined 1 hour and 30 minutes. These kinds of stats has the film the pulling in 15.2 million domestically in the first three days of release.

Following in 2nd place is last week’s champion, the political thriller Vantage Point. Sony scored the last 10+ mark for the weekend with the film grabbing 13.0 mil on its 3,150 theaters across the nation. The studio is likely happy with these numbers seeing as it now has the film at 41.0 mil in ten days of release with a budget listed at only 40 mil.  This has it set up for some clear profitable numbers for Sony. It hasn’t really been widely viewed overseas yet with only 1.7 mil from foreign sales.

Paramount Pictures has Spiderwick Chronicles in 3rd place in its third week of release, pulling in another 8.7 mil. I’d say this has the fantasy continuing steady numbers but the film is still showing in the most theaters out of the top 10 with 3,654 prints. That makes for an average rate of only $2,395 per showing. It also has a long way to go before it gets anywhere near the profitable range for Paramount. At the current moment, it has 55.0 mil domestically and only 3.1 mil in foreign territories. That has it at 58.2 mil in 18 days of release and a budget listed at 90 mil.

For not so wide-released films, The Other Boleyn Girl from Sony is the clear favorite of the group, having won the average showing rate for this report even if it landed in 4th place. The studio launched the film in only 1,166 theaters with an opening bow of 8.3 mil. This has its average at $7,118 per showing, which is clearly #1 of the top ten.

Fox’s fantasy adaptation of Jumper dropped two slots to 5th place for the weekend with it cashing in another 7.6 mil. The film is still getting shown in 3,128 theaters so like Spiderwick, it only has an average rate of $2,429 per showing. Unlike Spiderwick though, it’s pulling in decent oversea numbers with 66.8 mil domestically and another 60.4 mil internationally. The film has a budget of 85 mil and a worldwide gross of 127.2 mil in three weeks of release.

Disney stepped down two places with its sequel Step Up 2 the Streets pulling in 5.7 mil in 6th place. The follow-up to their 2006 success has likewise pulled in successful numbers for the studio, having accumulated 48.5 mil in three weeks of release. While this domestic mark is less than its counterparts Jumper and Spiderwick, it’s clear that this dance-off sequel doesn’t have the same budget even if Disney isn’t giving us that price range. It’s likely already in the profit margins for Disney and it will end up grossing as much as its predecessor, which finished off at 65.3 mil in 2006.

WB’s romantic adventure Fool’s Gold only dropped 28.4% in its fourth week of release, landing in 7th place with 4.6 million. The movie is taking advantage of being one of the only “couple” films and still getting shown in 2,845 theaters across the nation. No budget is listed by WB but it has 64.6 mil worldwide, 59.0 domestic and another 5.6 in foreign territories.

The final new release for the weekend, Summit Entertainment’s Penelope, found its way into 8th place by taking in 4.0 mil. The independent distributor only launched the Christina Ricci-James McAvoy vehicle in 1,196 theaters so this has its average rate at $3,349 per showing.

Miramax re-launched No Country for Old Men into 2,036 theaters this weekend after their film won the most Oscars last weekend but it didn’t translate into great box office numbers. The Coen-directed award winner landed in 9th place with 4.0 mil in receipts. This amounts to an average rate of only $1,966, which likely signifies that audiences either didn’t know about the wide release or passed on it preferring for it to hit DVD instead. In 17 weeks of release, the film has a domestic gross of 69.5 million. No budget is listed.

This could be the final weekend where we’re talking about Fox Searchlight’s Juno, film which landed an Oscar for new screenwriter Diablo Cody. After 13 weeks at the box office, the film finished in 10th place with 3.3 mil in box office receipts. Out of all the Oscar films, this is clearly the most successful by having domestically grossed 135.1 mil.

Saw "The Other Boelyn Girl" yesterday. Great cast. I enjoyed it.

Not amazing, but pretty good.

Caught "Semi-Pro" yesterday. Thought it was merely ok. Not many laughs. Expected more from the cast. Will Arnett was the sole brightspot where as everybody else seemed to be going through the motions. Take my advice rent this one.

I saw Semi-Pro also, have to agree with Flint it's a wait for video movie. I expected more from the film but I had a few laughs. Hopefully Stepbrothers turns out better than this one.
Oh and Mike Myers is back, caught The Love Guru previews, I didn't even know that dude had a movie that was coming out this summer.

Am I the only person who is sick of Will Ferrell and his same-old-tired schtick? This guy has mined the same character and premise for at least the last five years. Granted, it was funny the first couple of times, but now? If Will is going to have true
staying power, he needs to find some better
scripts. Let's face it: number one though it
may be, 15.2 is less than stellar.

I watched Spiderwick last night. Didn't like it. The story and characters were not developed enough in preproduction. Lemony Snicket was so much better (if I can even compare the two). How did this get 81% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Of course, I didn't take note that the average review on there was a 6.8 out of 10... which is a D+.

For any producers out there, if you are going to spend 90+ million dollars on a film, make sure the script is good.

#4...No, you're not the only person sick of Ferrell's less-than-funny schtick. I've never found anything he's done good for more than one or two laughs. I'm glad the gang didn't want to see this one. I'm hoping Ferrell's movies (Stiller's too) start tanking so we don't have to be subjected to many more movies and prime time trailers from them.

Instead, we all decided to do a family night and it ended up being so much fun. We bought a projector, hooked it up to a laptop and speaker system and played the new Justice League: The New Frontier cartoon for the kids...young and old! We invited kids from the neighborhood to see it and ended up with an audience of kids and adults numbering at least 30. We made popcorn on the grill. I didn't realize kids today dodn't know how to make popcorn without a microwave! Everyone loved the movie! Most of the kids ended up sleeping over, so the only drawback was making breakfast for everyone in the morning! I should have just gone to McDonalds!

I did get to see The Other Boelyn Girl, and was pretty unimpressed. The costumes and production design were great, the performances passable and at times excellent, but I found the movie kind of boring I guess. I wanted to see Penelope instead, but it's not playing at my local theater so I'll just have to wait a week or two I guess.

I'm curious to see 10,000 B.C. this weekend. I don't know how good it's going to be, but the visuals look pretty good.

New Frontier was indeed awesome. Just watched it late last night.

And right there with some of the rest here - I only find Will Ferrel funny in very, very small doses. Like Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back size doses.

I've been a huge Ferrell fan since the moment he started on SNL... That was back in early high school/middle school so I'm sure there's a bit of nostalgia attached to his schtick, but I still find it hillarious when he gets it right... Talladega was ok and Napoleon Dynamite ruined Blades of Glory for me, but I really enjoyed Semi Pro for what it was... It allowed me to slip back and enjoy that early sophomoric humor that I love so much... Call it a guilty pleasure if you want, but it cracks me up.

At one point I was curious about Vantage Point... Like way back last summer when they first started advertising it. My interest slipped... guess it's a good thing it did, as I hear the movie just wasn't that good.

10,000 BC... Just not that interested. I know they're going for a more mythical, fantastic approach to the whole thing but I just really would have preferred they didn't speak english... It just kills the whole thing for me. They don't have to grunt, but if you're going to have different prehistoric empires or whatever battling it out, don't have them conversing in English while they're doing so.

Will Ferrell is freakin HILARIOUS! Nuff Said. Just watched old school last night and laughed as if it were the first time I've seen it. Instaead of trumpeting the high and mighty horn (that is sounded way too often on this site) with statements such as "I'm hoping Ferrell's movies (Stiller's too) start tanking so we don't have to be subjected to many more movies and prime time trailers from them." or post #4. How about you just avoid those movies. There are soooooo many of us "low-brow" unsophisticated movie goers out there that love a good comedy. SLAPSTICK humor included. I always sense some misplaced jealousy whaen I read the same 3 standard format lines bashing a successful comedic actor.
Not all movie goers are movie geeks. Some of us just want a simple laugh from a simple movie. Long live Ferrel, Stiller, Black, and so on

experiMENTAL • Mar 02, 2008, 05:42pm •
I agree gauleyboy. although I wouldn't drop my dollars at a theater to see a Will Ferrell movie, I do enjoy watching them when I need a laugh or two. He's not the FUNNIEST guy in Hollywood to me, but I do enjoy him. I think he NAILED it with his tiny part in Wedding Crashers. When he does those kinds of characters, he really shines.
I will also agree, however, that he does seem to be oversaturating the big screen, as of late. But who cares? That doesn't mean I have to go watch. I'm happy for him and his checkbook.
