Mania Box Office Report: Zombie Love Conquers Stallone

Warm Bodies takes the Weekend

By Robert T. Trate     February 03, 2013

Picture this: The Expendables and its sequel make a ton of money. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis are all hot commodities again. Sure they are getting old but, money is still money. If you are a Hollywood Studio Big Wig you would have to put these guys back into star vehicles again. These old war horses did it before, they can do it again.

Now picture this. You are the are the 20th Century Fox Executive that green lit Die Hard 5: A Good Day to Die Hard. Arnie’s The Last Stand tanked as did Sly’s Bullet to the Head. Are you getting nervous or doubling down that this is a franchise sequel?

The winner this weekend was the Zom-Rom-Com Warm Bodies (see Mania’s review here). Box Office Mojo had this to say, historically, about the film and this weekend. “Including $520,000 from preview shows on Thursday, Warm Bodies grossed an estimated $20.03 million this weekend. That ranks seventh all-time among Super Bowl openings, and is generally in line with last year's Chronicle ($22 million) and The Woman in Black ($20.9 million). While it was also off a bit from Zombieland's $24.7 million, this is without-a-doubt a strong start for a unique movie that could have very easily been ignored on another weekend”. - Ray Subers

After our review and these numbers, are you ready to take a chance on Warm Bodies?

Warm Bodies

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Silver Linings Playbook

Zero Dark Thirty

Bullet to the Head

Django Unchained

Les Miserables

This coming weekend is a strange mix for genre fans. Will you see Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects? Jet Li in The Sorcerer and the White Snake? Or will you feel the need, the need for speed and revisit Top Gun in 3D?

Just saw Hansel and Gretel this evening...campy fun!  Some nice practical effects in there as well.

Stallone and Momoa were good in Bullet to the head, but the script sucked, the director sucked and Sung Kang had absolutely zero charisma or stage presence, it would've been better if they stayed with Thomas Jane for the role.

Every time I hear Stallone speak, I picture Elmer Fudd high on testosterone.

And Warm Bodies was great.

Didn't see anything. Still haven't seen 0Dark30, Last Stand, or Bullet To The Head. Including Parker, all these action movies doing badly bodes ill for Willis AKA our Roy Rogers "from a bankrupt culture who thinks he's John Wayne". The only think he has an edge on the others is that his is part of a famous franchise and hopefully Die Hard will do decent B.O.

No surprise that Bullet to the Head and Last Stand were flops.  I'll see them eventually but they had that straight to video look from the previews.  The latest Die Hard should do better than those two but I don't see it being a monster hit.  The wife and kids want to see Warm Bodies so I guess we will sometime this week.

Didn't see anything this weekend but I may try to catch something during the week. Hey sometimes life gets in the way of my movies ;)

And yeah it looks like Sly and Arnie are proving that they're no longer big draws unless it's a team up. Or was it the movies and not the stars that turned people off. Guess we'll find out if Arnie makes another Terminator and Conan

I expect Willis to kick both their asses with the next Die Hard.

 "Warm Bodies" was awesome!

A pot-pourri of elements that really had no right to gel... but they did! And beautifully, I might add!

Two thumbs waaaaay up!!!

I didn't see any movies over the weekend.  But last Tuesday I finally saw Les Mis.  It was a very good film but I wouldn't say it was the best of the year.  It was a little off putting that  there was no dialogue that wasn't sung.  And they made a change to the ending that I think weakened it.

I am pretty sure Die Hard will do way better than the Stallone or Arny movies cause they just looked bad and Die Hard always looks good.

Tevii 2/4/2013 8:07:04 PM

Wise - Im pretty sure that its just the movies that sucked. Stallone and Schwarzenegger can still be draws, especially with characters that have name recognition like Rambo and Conan...just like Die Hard will probably do well.

But Bullet to the Head sucked. I cant believe that director has a job and i cant believe they dropped Thomas Jane for Sung Kang. Stallone and Momoa deserved a better movie than this.

Havent seen The Last Stand though.
