Some new set photos of DRAGON BALL Z have made their way online courtesy of Hoy Cinema. If anything, there's a photo which shows how Justin Chatwin (Goku) will look in the live action version of the anime. The photos are from the Mexico City set and production will be moving to Durango in early January. The film stars Justin Chatwin, James Marsters, Jamie Chung, Emmy Rossum and Joon Park, James Wong is directing, based on a screenplay he wrote for Fox.

Plot Summary: "Dragon Ball Z" is adapted from the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world. It tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys.

DRAGON BALL Z will hit theaters August 15, 2008.

Some properties don't always need the live-action treatment, in my opinion. If they have hit a homerun being animated, why not also do a big-screen feature in animated form?
Just thought I'd throw that out there before they start lensing Avatar: The Last Airbender. :)

hmm. I don't know about this one. Even looking at the photos it seems they've changed quite a bit. Almost looks as if they're placing the DBZ world into a modern society.

How did the Transformers get into this? I saw Bumblebee? I really hope this does not suck. I hope they keep it serious to some degree for the fighting anyway. All the talking animals in the show remind me of demons from compass now.

Why are all the fanboy sites calling it "Dragonball Z" when the trades and imdb calls it "Dragonball"?

That wasn't Bumblebee or a Camaro, it was a Dodge Charger.

it was a Dodge Charger rip-off Bumblebee (quite similar to Transformers, Lance.) these pics dont show much of anything. even that actor was wearing an orange shirt with black hair... who cares... show me something tangible.

I just hope that it doesn't suck as much as the cartoon. Being live action is a plus and I think Wong has been decent with his previous endeavors.

adapting this into live action should have been far easier than adapting Speed Racer but still I have to wonder "WHY?"
not "why is this being made?" but "Why live action when beautiful CGI films like Shrek and Ratatuille exist?

This movie is going to be beyond bad. How the hell are they going to recreate those insane hair styles without looking ridiculous? And if they down play the hair, and wackiness, then why bother at all? It's lose / lose. Anyone remember the Fist of the North Star movie? Or the Street Fighter movie? We're headed down this path once again.

I think they could have done a better job if they had signed Stephen Chow to helm/write/star. I mean after I watched kung Fu Hustle I thought if this guy does Dragonball Z I'll watch.
