Setting Out the Fine China

By: Chris Wyatt
Date: Wednesday, August 07, 2002

The undeniable power of last year's groundbreaking novel PERDIDO STREET STATION confirmed young British writer China Mieville's status as SF publishing's fastest-rising star.

"I appreciate all the support," says the author. "Both over here and in the States, the reaction has been great. I'm overwhelmed."

PERDIDO, set in the retro-futuristic city of New Crobuzon, is deep, dreamy and hypnotic. It's a cross between dark fantasy, science fiction and horror, and critics hailed the book as a fresh approach to genre. But the author doesn't share that point of view.
