Alrighty you don't understand what the 50% level means to Exhibitors. It's the point at which a exhibitor or movie house is taking in roughly half of the cost of paid admissions. In other words it is no longer costing them money to show a movie. I could tell you haow this works into the bidding and play/screen agreements, but that's for another thread. This can be good or bad depending on how many people are actually still attending scheduled screening. Typically in the US it works out to be something like this:
1st Week = 5% to 10%
2nd Week = 10% to 15%
3rd Week = 15% to 20%
4th Week = 20% to 30%
5th Week and beyond 40% to 75 %
Of course any of those numbers can be higher or lower depending on agreements (Not sure about IMAX)
Avatar is awful. Abosutlely none of my friends said that they really enjoyed it. I would have to agree, it was just about some of the worst storytelling and weak acting I've ever seen or heard.... Well maybe not as bad as The Phantom Menace. All my friends and I agreed that the CGA, all gussied up with modern 3D techniques made for a great day to be at the movies.
As the comment I mad implied; I am worried that film makers may start making more of the same with more time and talent devoted to the craft rather and less time on the art of storytelling.
I can think of many films that used groundbreaking techniques and had insane amounts of media hype, but still crashed and burned or did not perform as well as expected or as a prvious attempt had. As I clearly said: "You can't argue with success".
