Columbia Pictures and Sam Raimi's Buckaroo Entertainment have picked up the rights to THE SHADOW, the legendary 1930s pulp hero. Siavash Farahani will write the script.

The character, created by  Walter B. Gibson, debuted in 1931 on a CBS radio show as a crime-fighter who skulked in shadows wearing a hat and cape, and who had the power to cloud men's minds.

Sam Raimi, Josh Donen and Michael Uslan will produce.  Raimi might direct.

Dear Santa, please let this project die. With all the amazing characters from comics to choose from, we get "The Shadow"? I mean, does anyone under the age of 70 really give a sh*t? Who the hell is asking for a "Shadow" movie?

I agree w/ exfan, good to see a new Shadow coming out. I am under 70, hell I am under 30 and I know who The Shadow was even before the first movie came out.
Maybe cause I find things instead of being told what to listen to and like. If there were no characters like The Shadow you wouldn't have your amazing comic characters of today Pieman.

I'm interested in Raimi's take on the Shadow as well. Unfortunately, just about every movie featuring comic heroes of yesteryear haven't fared well at the box office. I'd like for this to be a hit, but unfortunately I think pieman's attitude toward this project is probably typical of the movie-going audience in general.

After the Penelope Ann Miller/John Lone/Alec Baldwin suckfest, I'm hoping they can revive the brand. Personally, I would much rather see a PHANTOM remake...

I'm also under 70 and I also love the character. He could be intro'd properly to a new generation. Raimi I imagine has a great idea for doing the Shadow. I hope it's scary and dark the way the character should be portrayed. He's wanted to do this character for years. Darkman was inspired by his love. If he plans on this being his next project, it bodes the end of his Spidey involvement.

It would be interesting to see what they can do with this character. The radio show was pretty cheesy, but the pulp fiction novels they were (loosely) based on, are really good and, in the right hands, they could be turned into an incredible movie. After seen how Raimi has handled Spider-man and other movies, I think he's an excellent choice to pull this off.

Raimi wanted to make this before, but settled for Darkman instead. Raimi could make a great version of The Shadow, The Phantom or even Doc Savage. I worry he might be a little tired of the hero genre after spending so many years working in Spider-Man's world. After his work on Spider-Man and other films, I trust Raimi to do a great job on any film he helms.

You know, I kind of enjoyed the Alec Baldwin version in a cheesy eye-candy kind of way. Prior to the now common over reliance on CGI which has made spectacle in movies somewhat boring, Shadow was visually interesting. Script: bad, Comic Relief: painful, Plot: forgettable (based on the fact that I can't remember it), Acting: Corney, Action: yawn. But visually: I enjoyed it. It had a unique style to it. It seems too often now that movies are all trying for spectacle without any style (oddly enough, I'd say Raimi's Spiderman movies are exceptions to this trend)
