Shelf Space

Shelf space is becoming an all important thing around the house lately. Seasons of ‘Star Trek’, ‘Smallville’, and ‘The Family Guy’ are filling up the shelves at an alarming rate. So, it really switches my phaser from stun to kill when I see complete seasons of a TV show or TV series come out in a nice neat little box set. Throw in some new special features and my original DVDs look like VHS tapes.

Case in point; this week: ‘The X-Files: The Ultimate Collection’, ‘Seinfeld - The Complete Series’, and ‘Wonder Woman - The Complete Collection’. All of these came out individually but now, low and behold, here is this nice neat box set with bonus features and previously unreleased material. Why are we, the faithful, punished for buying early? Are we too eager? Do those special features really matter? I stopped buying TV show seasons when they are initially released. Personally, I found it cheaper to wait and buy them after the next two seasons have been released because they were always sale. This started with ‘Smallville’ season one. It was $64.99 the week it came out, then switched to a sale price (months later) after more of the seasons had been released. The seasons dropped to $14.99 (by the way the ‘Wonder Woman’ seasons dropped to $14.99 as well this week). Then again, I am sure there will be a nice neat box set covered in silver with a glimmering red “S” on it some where down the road. On the opposite side of the argument I got into ‘Farscape’ after it was cancelled and was able to save time (I didn’t have to wait for individual season to be released) and money by purchasing whole seasons in a nice box set.   With the ‘Stargate’ Complete Series and the ‘Angel’ set having just been released and having never watched a single episode, but know several people who rave about them, these complete series sets are incredibly enticing.

The studios should put out complete, complete sets of older shows. ‘Land of the Giants’ came out in one giant set, yet ‘Star Trek: the Next Generation’ just released its uber box set last month after the individual seasons have been out for years. Why? They could have charged out the nose for it initially and Trekkies would have bought it.   What really irks me is ‘The Simpsons’ come out individually and even then crawl out of FOX at the slowest pace with only nine seasons released to date. Every season should be out by now. By the time they release all the seasons the next format (Blu-ray or HD-DVD) will have taken over and your sets will be taken up a lot of shelf space.

In the mean time, while the shelves keep filling up with multiple seasons of our favorite shows, I put the question to you Maniacs out there: What do you prefer, the big deluxe all inclusive box set? Or the (now) cheaper, short on the extras, single seasons at a more reasonable price?  What TV series have you been patient on? The ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ the complete series has been on my wish list for a while.

Personally I don't understand who the intended auciences are for these new "complete series" box sets...especially the one's which have already been released broken up into seasons. Are there really that many fans out there who loved a show enough to buy it on DVD that didn't already??? I'm a huge Buffy and Angel fan, and I was eager to buy up each season when they came out. Are there really any fans out there who waited until now? And are they really big enough fans to drop the hundred plus for the complete set, when they wouldn't spend $40 or so every six months to year for the Seasons? I guess I just don't understand...

Anyways, I'm happy with the individual seasons of the shows in my collection. A complete box set would have been nice to buy as an early option as well...but I probably wouldn't have been able to afford a lump sum like that anyways.

Oh yeah...and most of these new complete box sets have pretty much the same bonus features the indy seasons had. The differences are far and few between, and hardly worth the extra price. Shelf space is really the only issue.

Not sure I see the big deal. Some people like to collect as individual DVDs are released. Others want to wait for a whole set. Sometimes, you only want specific seasons (I only want the first 3-4 seasons of M*A*S*H, for example). Other times, you would want the whole series.

Not everyone has deep pockets. You might have to wait to buy something later and, if it's offered in a nice megapack, that may be the purchase you want to make at that time instead of some competing product.

if I can buy them cheaper in one complete series, I'm all for it, but I am pretty sick to death or releasing things with additional held back material that should have been released orignally.

What its making me do, is NOT buy newly released things, and just sit back and wait a year or so, for the "deluxe enhanced" treatments... and if they don't come out, it's no biggie, since I canm then buy the original release at a hugely discounted pricepoint.

Or just pick up a used unloved copy off ebay or in local suncoast or video stores.

They are just shooting themselves in the foot in my case, and I think many others that have also been burned like this are doing the same thing now.

It just kills me to keep buying DVD's when they have this new technology out, but I can't buy Blu-ray until they get the format down and I'm afraid to get HD DVD because I think it might be the one to lose, if one loses. I'm just really confused right now what to do.
Part of me wants to buy a PS3 just so it won't be worthless if Blu-ray does lose or if the format finally gets to 2.0.

I haven't even replaced all my VHS yet, so I'm definitely not going out & getting HD DVD or Blu-Ray yet. I'm waiting at *least* until format emerges the winner. I have no clue why anyone would buy either format now.

Gareee, I agree 100%. There have been several movies I have not bought because I knew that a deluxe version would be out soon. Likewise, there have been several deluxe sets I have not bought because I already had the regular DVD. I like what I've seen in a few cases recently (Spider-Man 3, Transformers) where they released a basic DVD and a 2-disc SE at the same time. That's what I'm talkin' about! Gimme the choice up front.

Another thing that drives me nuts is box sets of incomplete series. Why the F- should I buy the Indiana Jones or Die Hard trilogies that are being sold as the 4th movie is hitting the theater or is currently in production? Makes no sense! I could see *maybe* if I had bought the Indy series 10 years ago when a 4th seemed like a pipe dream. But now? Or Harry Potter. Why buy a box set of the first 4 movies or the first 5 or 6 books? Makes no sense!

Another reason for me to like Firefly/Serenity.
1 dvd set and 2 movies. My set is complete. hehehe

Not like all the others with 10 releases of the same movie/tv show over and over again.

Quality over Quantity!!
