Creative Screenwriting magazine talked with Ryang about his project. He told CS, "There's a contest open to assistant editors in New York thrown by the Association of Independent Creative Editors (AICE). They give you six classic movies and you have to edit a trailer for one of them, but in a different genre. The movies were The Shining, Super Size Me, Red River, Titanic, The Parent Trap, and West Side Story. I chose The Shining."
The editor noted, "I watched the movie first. I wanted to turn The Shining on its head, take it to the polar opposite. I watched the movie and all the cues I was looking for -- smiles, laughs -- they weren't coming through. The little kid Danny doesn't smile a single time during the movie. And when Jack Nicholson smiles...you can use only the beginning of his smile, I've realized, because once those eyebrows start pointing, it ruins the moment."
