The SHINING - A touching romantic comedy?

A Columbia University graduate and now assistant editor, Rob Ryang, has a movie that over 200,000 people a day are watching. He cut a trailer for THE SHINING, added the requisite chummy narrator and a heartfelt pop classic, and created a 90-second preview for SHINING, a romantic comedy

Creative Screenwriting magazine talked with Ryang about his project. He told CS, "There's a contest open to assistant editors in New York thrown by the Association of Independent Creative Editors (AICE). They give you six classic movies and you have to edit a trailer for one of them, but in a different genre. The movies were The Shining, Super Size Me, Red River, Titanic, The Parent Trap, and West Side Story. I chose The Shining."

The editor noted, "I watched the movie first. I wanted to turn The Shining on its head, take it to the polar opposite. I watched the movie and all the cues I was looking for -- smiles, laughs -- they weren't coming through. The little kid Danny doesn't smile a single time during the movie. And when Jack Nicholson smiles...you can use only the beginning of his smile, I've realized, because once those eyebrows start pointing, it ruins the moment."

I saw this a few weeks ago on IFilm. I have to say that it was VERY clever! If someone had never seen or heard of "The Shining" and had seen this clip, they would have been fooled! Incredible job!

And I just LOVED when they turned "West Side Story" into "28 Days Later!" and how they turned "Cabin Fever" into a touching drama!
