Shopping Bag: The Muppet Show

The Muppet Show, The Complete Third Season, finally hits the stands today. My biggest problem with the whole DVD set is that when all five seasons finally do come out, the old DVDs will probably be obsolete and I’ll have to buy them all over again. Nonetheless, Buena Vista Home Entertainment is getting the Muppets closer and closer to our generation of fans. Don’t get me wrong, seeing Rachel Welch in her glorious hay day is fine but often I find myself wondering who the likes of Marisa Berenson or Roy Clark were. It is a shame that the “Muppets Morsels” option is missing from the DVDs. Perhaps it would have filled me in on who and why. The special guests are great but, make no doubts about it the stars are clearly the Muppets.
The humor is great, light hearted and, above all, the show is packed with eye rolling fun that at times makes you wonder how they got away with it. Some of the jokes would never fly on a children’s program today. Yet, was The Muppet Show really just for kids?
This season has it’s moments but nothing compared to seeing Sylvester Stallone plug the first Rocky while singing and dancing in a gladiator outfit. Stallone mugs to the camera perfectly and ends with a somber number that closes the show.
Alice Cooper on the other hand took the show to a very dark place. He incorporated many of his hits and closed with “School’s Out”. I was surprised to see him talking to the devil, something that might not play out today. Cooper’s finest moments come from his tongue-in-cheek banter with Kermit after his numbers, wheeling and dealing as if he was the devil and Kermit was Faust.
Like the previous season of The Muppet Show, Buena Vista Home Entertainment has included some rare archival interviews and a brilliant gem of a documentary called “Muppets on Puppets”. Here Henson and crew break down the different puppets, how they work and what their take is on the different mechanics. Henson also breaks the news to one of his alter egos they are indeed just a puppet. That revelation was nothing compared to seeing a young Frank Oz with hair. For this Maniac it was as if I was seeing Yoda’s high school senior picture.
So, get off the couch and sit real close because, “it’s time to put on make up. It’s time to dress up right. It’s time for The Muppet Show tonight!”
