A week or so ago I received The Richie Rich/ Scooby-Doo Show Volume 1 from Warner Home Entertainment. A Saturday spent by yours truly watching cartoons, eating cereal and staying in my pajamas ‘till noon. The memories came rushing back over the seven different episodes and with each break I had the tiniest hope to see an old toy commercial. The show was still eye rolling fun and its seven minutes per segment made the simple plots all the more enjoyable.
I recently spent another Saturday morning with the The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show - The Complete Series. Both DVDs are a part of the Hanna-Barbera Collection. They have been restored by the good people at Warner Home Entertainment in conjunction with Turner Home Entertainment. I came to a realization after finishing my last episode of Richie Rich. Where are The Herculoids? Give me my Fantastic 4 circa 1967, damn it. Yet, the one cartoon title that I have been unable to live without is Thundarr the Barbarian.
Thundarr the Barbarian was the best post apocalyptic series on television that set a precedent for my imagination. The Earth was torn apart by a rogue comet that came between it and the moon. A new world emerged from the ashes of old. The Earth became a world of science and sorcery. Thundarr was the lone hero, a man who fought for justice. It was a great mixture of the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century TV show and Conan the Barbarian. Thundarr got in his adventures with a kick ass Chewbacca-like cat of a wing man named Ookla. However, what truly made the show was his honey of a princess/ sorceress named Ariel. It was the best part of my Saturday morning and it is sorely missed.
Now Thundarr was not a Hanna-Barbera production. It was an off shoot from that company by two artists named Joseph Ruby and Kenneth Spears who formed Ruby-Spears Productions. So the plausibility of a DVD is next to none. Are Ted Turner and his Boomerang channel my saving grace? Should I turn to pirated DVDs? I don’t have Boomerang and Toonami isn’t playing them so recording them is out of the question. Sign one of those internet petitions? A lot of good those do. I guess I’ll just have to sit and wait.
All right, off the subject of Thundarr the Barbarian. Check out the whole Shopping Bag this week with its 30+ Blu-ray DVDs. I hardly mentioned the dramas and comedies but there are plenty of those as well. Blu-ray has arrived and the tiles we want are finally showing up.
